Zoom into the galaxy M82 and its supernova SN 2014J

Показать описание
This animation shows the location of the galaxy M82 on the sky (off the bowl of the Big Dipper), then zooms in to show the location of the supernova SN 2014J. After that, it shows animated Hubble images of a "light echo", the flash of light from the supernova lighting up dust clouds all around it. We see this as an expanding circle from the explosion.

Are those light "shock waves" from supernova's also used to (improve the) estimate how far their galaxies are away from us? Or would the density of the illuminated dust cloud add too much of an unknown variation to the speed of light, such that other methods are more accurate?
