The 2020 console war is already over - PS5 vs Xbox Series X

The 2020 console war is here. The PS5 and Xbox Series X have been announced, and are already locked in a battle.

At least that's what people want you to think. We've been set up to think this is PS5 VS XBOX SERIES X NOW FIGHT, but honestly, this year is so interesting that this console "war" is going to be so different.

And why do people always forget Nintendo?

So, if you want to know what I think will happen during the 2020 game console generation, why there's no such things as a console war, or if you just want to fanboy in the comments, please watch this video.

We go into the history of the Sony and Microsoft console wars, how Nintendo has historically avoided them, what Xbox is planning in the 2020 console war with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Game Pass, and how that compares to the Sony PS5.

Have to keep in mind the market for each brand. PS3 was available in more countries. PS4 launched in 3 times as many countries as the Xbox One. The only "war" would be over the US market.

Top notch video! Regardless of not being a gaming channel, I have to say that your analysis and breakdown of the different next-gen console “war” elements was informative, balanced, and well delivered. Plus it was a joy to watch!

As someone who owned a PS2 and an original Xbox, this cycle and its emphasis on Game Pass is eerily reminiscent of Microsoft’s thinking when it came to online console gaming. Including a built-in Ethernet/broadband port on the back of their very first console not only made Xbox the default online gaming console but having a centralized service with Xbox Live provided a consistency and quality that Sony was never able to match... and that’s in spite of the fact that Xbox Live was subscription based at $60 per year whereas PS2, which required an external network adapter, was free. We take for granted how controversial it was to pay $5 per month for Xbox Live... not to mention that the vast majority of households had dial-up connections. It was a ballsy move to push online play so heavily.

Microsoft thought ahead and anticipated where to go next with console gaming. Xbox Live dominated the online gaming space and that’s partly because Microsoft took steps that, while not making a whole lot of sense at the time, eventually became the new normal for console gaming. That next evolution seems very likely to be Xbox Game Pass because of the consistency and quality of service that it delivers... Sony, once again, seems like they are dragging their feet when it comes to adopting a new gaming service.

Keep growing your channel, mate. You come across as one of us, a gamer and consumer rather than a sponsored mouthpiece for either Sony or MS. It's refreshing. About the gamepass, their acquisition of Zenimax just reinforces the points you made. It's all about Gamepass for them. Them spending $7.5bn was them future proofing that subscription. I have no doubt if Sony allowed, they'd happily sell put it on PSN too.

"Sony has better exclusives" - that's a matter of opinion. Sony only has single player exclusives. They didn't release an MP game for decades. Their SP games mostly don't fit my taste (Spiderman, etc). MS has extremely strong MO exclusives that are played years after release and till this day have monthly tournaments as they're eSports quality. I play Sea of Thieves, Halo 5, Forza Horizon and Gears all the time. Last time I played on PS4 was when God of war came out and it took me 9 hours to finish it and never launch it again.
