Xbox is Winning the Console War (By Not Really Caring)

The “console war” is obviously a widely known term in video games, but this video game standoff is reaching the end of its lifespan, as Microsoft makes great and continuing strides over Sony while continuously changing the industry around them.

Battling for market share and control of the video game console community, these two companies have adopted wildly different strategies, but one of those strategies might be a whole lot better than the other.

Xbox and PlayStation are for casuals
Real men play video games on their Samsung S800 smart fridge

I just don’t want to say goodbye to physical copies.

Meanwhile, Nintendo just strolls happily along....

Console wars being "foundational" is petty and sad. Don't get me wrong, competition is good for the consumer, but "console wars" between consumers who make their console preference a big enough part of their identity to be emotionally invested in a brand? That's sad, and does nothing but make corporate suits orgasm. COMPANIES DO NOT AND NEVER WILL CARE ABOUT YOU BEYOND GETTING YOUR MONEY.

I think the bigger issue here is pricing, console launches are everything! Both the PS3 and XB1 lost because they where more expensive at launch and they lost an entire generation because of it, they even had less games because developers didn't like it. The Xbox 360 had 4 Halo games but they only made 1 after the XB1 sold less. Both Microsoft and Sony never want that to happen again, that's why they are waiting so late into this year to announce their prices, each side is waiting for the other side to pull the trigger first so they can match or undercut them.

I'll be buying a PS5 for Demon's Souls alone. Personally having a kick-ass PC and being able to play XB games on PC, I see no use whatsoever to buy the X Series.

Sony is selling consoles, Microsoft is attempting to sell consoles and services.

Xcloud, game pass, pc services. You don't even have to buy a series X for them to make cash in the upcoming gen.

You're being too optimistic towards Microsoft. Every few years someone comes spelling doom for physical media and to those people I say: remember there are countries outside the US. Sure, Gamepass is a great deal, but it's not available in most countries. XCloud, PS Now and the like require an internet infrastructure that's just not viable in more than half of the planet (games and movies are not the same when it comes to streaming). And then there's the whole deal of regional restriction, where some companies outright refuse to release their products in certain countries, and go even as far as to block the use of VPNs so you can't acquire them.

For a great majority of the population, physical media is just more viable. People have to stop living in a bubble when analyzing these things.

I don't really see how theres still console wars.
Its pretty obvious and apparent that both consoles are targeting 2 different audiences so it's not worth comparing.

I have a PlayStation because it has experiences no one else seems to be doing: Single Player Story Driven.

Everyone else seems to have all sights on "games as service" or "multiplayer~e-sports" or "free to play micro transactions/loot boxes."

That whole "ecosystem" is something I couldn't care less. I wanna buy my games in disks to keep them for ever, I don't wanna play online, and yes I buy blu ray disks to watch movies, again, to keep them for ever and not rely on availability of services and/or connection, specially 4K ones.

If the Series X came out half price, I'd still get a PS5 for the first party games, that's how good they are to me, I don't care if Xbox gives me 200 games for a buck if there is not a single exclusive there I wanna play.

So basically, Microsoft is trying to develop a nuclear bomb? Cool.

Sonys exclusives have been killing Microsoft. I've always been an Xbox guy, ever since the original Xbox released. I bought it and then 360 and then the one.

However, I've also bought used Playstations after they've become cheap.. This next generation I'll likely for the first time buy a PS5 and then just play Microsoft games on my PC which is better than the Xbox Series X anyway.

Also, as I get older I enjoy the single player experiences that Sonys line of games tend to be more than shooters and online games that Xbox leans more towards

Well, now take these to a country like Brazil, where each new game costs more than 250 of our currency ( for context the average pay is 1500 monthly, not gonna touch in console price). The way I see having something like gamepass is essential if you like gaming, and I'm pretty sure this reality if not even worse applies to far more places.

i tend to love your videos, but this one, i think youre seeing it wrong. the way microsoft is headed, their console platform is going to turn into a boutique PC builder with only a few options. sony has maintained their focus on the games, which yes it sucks that theyre exclusive, but everything has been about making the games better. making them run better, making them look better. microsoft has the aim of selling to as many as possible, because more people are more sales.

basically, microsoft is gunning the mobile way, while sony is trying the PC method. yes microsoft can make more money, but that wont make sony go away. itll end up like nintendo where theyre just more different to the point that it'll turn into comparing baseball to football and basketball. yes they all have balls and sweaty dudes, but theyre all going for different holes with different outfits

I feel like Sony could always switch gears and use PlayStation Now as a counter weight to Xbox’s Game Pass
