“After the play, I took a hold of Martin's arm and said, ‘Ninety-four, you're out of game. I'm ejecting you.' And he pulled away and said, ‘I'm not going anywhere with you.' I looked at him and, tongue-in-cheek, I said, ‘If you don't come with me, I'm going to let the Bears kill you.' He said, ‘Let's go.'”

Watched that game on TV at the time as a Packer fan and was nothing but embarrassed and outraged by that dirty play on the Bears QB. That player quickly and justifiably got kicked off the team permanently.

One thing to add, when Jerry Markbreit, told him that he was ejected, Martin refused at first, then Markbreit told him "If you don't come with me, I'm going to let the Bears kill you", Martin left soon afterwards

Charles Martin was well known for these types of dirty hits throughout his career since high school. He was basically black listed after this and was out of the league completely within two years. He died about ten years later from liver failure

I totally agree with you and this one play ruined a back-to-back superbowl run by the Bears.

I had totally forgotten about this play until I was discussing the ‘85 bears only winning one championship. The ‘85 & ‘86 Bear’s roster was virtually identical, and it took a conversation with a Chicago fan for that memory recall!!
