From Savior to Villain | The Curious Fate of Scrappy-Doo

Is it time to cut Scrappy-Doo some slack? Or does he deserve all the hate that comes his way?

While some characters develop a fandom, others develop a hatedom, and it's difficult to find a cartoon character more maligned and despised than Scooby-Doo's nephew, Scrappy-Doo. The character was introduced to the Scooby-Doo franchise in the late 1970s in an attempt to bolster ratings and save the show from cancellation. It was a bold shake-up and it worked, audiences seemed to respond well to the character and the show's ratings instantly improved. But not everyone was happy with Scrappy, and over the years the pup has been dragged through the mud, being mocked in Cartoon Network commercials, humiliated in other shows, cast as the main villain in the first live-action movie; even fan fiction about his murdered corpse popping up in Miami went viral. Scrappy has even become synonymous with the concept of Jumping the Shark, and his name has been used to refer to characters being introduced to series which have caused fans to unintentionally hate the character. So how did Scrappy-Doo go from savior to villain, and is all this hate justified? Scrappy was not the problem. The writers and others were. They got greedy and way too ahead of themselves and thus messed up. But yeah its been over 30 years already give Scrappy another chance. Were it not for him the show and the franchise would have been scrapped years ago

Honestly I’d rather have Scrappy back than have Velma get a new season at this point. It’s not only the lesser of two evils but Scrappy does deserve a break

What a lot of people are missing is that Fred and the girls had ALREADY fallen to the background by the time Scrappy was added. Especially in that last season before him. It was more about Shaggy and Scooby and the chase, while Fred and the girls remained largely separate (and found the clues by themselves) most of the time. So Scrappy was the logical direction as their new "straight man" partner.

Scrappy was made the villain of the movie because writer James Gunn (along with a majority of Scooby-Doo fans) loathed the character, though he apologized when it turns out that Scrappy had some fans who weren't pleased with the portrayal of him in the movie.

I have never hated Scrappy. Granted, I am not old enough to have watched the "seasons" he was a part of, but I did catch a few re-runs growing up and enjoyed the episodes well enough. I remember his catch-phrase being repeated by some adults in my family here in Mexico and vaguely remember it turning into a kind-of meme in general as well, but I'm not really sure.

Anyway, I definitely think Scrappy has been overhated and while I understand why some fans grew to hate him, I feel he deserves a second chance.
