To be honest, M1 Abrams is a very good tank and proved itself many times and still is a good tank for modern battles, so upgrading it can be argued to be a better option instead of designing a new tank. However, as a design it is very old and it is starting to show its age and some design elements don't seem to be not wanted to be kept in the eyes of the army, like a crew needing a loader due to the non-existent auto-loader mechanism or the old hull which is not changed or had minimal changes. M1A3 is now in development to potentially replace the current Abram variants in use right now.

It would be closer to 40 years with the SEPv3. Then the snail would have to make new composite armor for an M1, and they'd have to cook up some new BS about why they won't add M829A3.
