Trying to put a mockup for an oval shaped object, created the outline and the smart object but when I upload the image that is supposed to go on it, it does not take the outlined area.. the image is rectangular

Hi, when I open an image and use the rectangle tool it doesn't create a black box with option to convert to smart object; it just creates a rectangular outline? Is this a setting I need to change? Thank you

I have one more question, I can't get the curve correct, is there a trick or tip to getting the curve just right so that the mockup design isn't all warped looking .thank you for sharing this tutorial.
