I ran a campaign in 1983 that took a similar turn. But it was an evil Lich tired of adventurers bothering him who set up the rumors of a head of Vecna and put a skull with one eye deep in a dungeon full of traps and minions.

The party had to REALLY work hard to get that stupid useless mummy's skull.

Wow I actually heard this story in person years ago from someone who was involved in it. The internet has become a scary small world

Haha! How did no one think (if this was actually a real artefact) that if you cut off your head and put Vecna's in its place, It would be Vecna's brain in charge as your player's was in the severed head lying nearby?

It has been fifteen years since I last read this on a D&D Geocities page.

this awesome tale reminds me of the original Wizard of oz book. its dark. the tin man kept cutting off parts of his body when the witch enchanted his axe, even his head, but a friend who was a tin maker replaced the body parts. did ja know that :P

Notes from a NG human Idiot;
Greetings from lovely Restenford(i ate something at Dinnertime yesterday that currently doesn't care for me...)!
As much as The French Revolution joke above terrified me(the Neighboring kingdom of Keoland lost a lot of their Nobility recently due to a similar uprising), i'm personally of the opinion that Group One did the smart thing by allowing Group Two's own ego and lust for power to do them in. Group Two had no right to be angry with the DM, as they would've allowed Group Two to do the same or something similar. Though i personally couldn't do a campaign like that(GvG), as i'd perfer if everyone was working towards a similar end goal...
May your pantheon ever favor you
Baron Trevelyan of Restenford

I heard this story way back in 2001 when I started playing... or maybe in 2004. Either way, this is a really old story, and it's fun to see it from the OP's perspective.

even if it did work the characters brain would be in their own head that they replaced so if it did work then the party would probably just end up spawning a boss

Old school player here. I remember hearing this year's ago. Try out "Eric and the dread gazebo" too. 😂

The best part was the complete lack of campfire commentary at the end XD

I've heard tales of this fake item before, I'm impressed it killed 3 players in this instance lol

I guess you could say they were a bunch of boneheads.

Ah, when you describe something as having no magical aura and the party jump straight to 'this is powerful stuff!'
I've had a group waste over a hour shouting things at a non-magical stone door because 2 + 2 = 6 to some people.

Hm, actually... Scimitar is pronounced "simətər". You don't write "schimitar".
