00:00 Flip Flops Introduction

In some quarters, flip-flops are maligned as everything that is wrong with modern menswear. But since 2006, flip-flop sales have eclipsed even sneaker sales in North America. So whether you consider them tops or consider them flops, flip-flops have clearly flipped the script when it comes to casual shoes.

01:00 Early History of Flip Flops

In actuality, sandals, the proto-flip-flops, are one of the oldest shoe types. A cache of woven fiber sandals found in Oregon's Fort Rock Cave could be about 10,000 years old. And some truly fantastic sandals could be found in Ancient Egypt.

08:02 Why Men Wear Flip Flops: 1. Holiday Culture
08:50 2. Beach Culture
09:24 3. Societal Casualization
10:00 4. A Focus on Comfort
10:40 5. The Heroic Physique

These social movements were helped by the fact that, as mentioned, manufacturers intentionally marketed the flip-flop for everyday wear. So between organic desire and a little prepackaged push, it’s not hard to see how flip-flops got such a strong foothold in menswear.

11:44 Is There A Place For Flip Flops In Classic Style?

When it comes to Classic Style, we do feel that flip-flops have a place. That place just happens to be at the beach or the pool. If you are cultivating a classic look, we feel that there aren’t many other circumstances that will allow for flip-flops.

Having been born and raised in a beach town, we were always "shod" with hard leather shoes as children. The bones of our little feet wouldn't grow properly, if not "molded" by strong exterior forces. Flip flops were for wearing on the sand/ boardwalk only ! I'm only 63, but i remember this well, as im sitting here in flip flops. I went to the beach yesterday. It's HOT there..

It would be cool to have a video on work wear, like safari jackets and Norfolk jackets for people who like to dress up, but don't a a job conducive to wearing regular suits and sport coats. I work at a warehouse and typically wear cotton or linen safari jackets and tweed or corduroy Norfolk jackets, knit or woven wool or cotton ties, and linen or corduroy pants. Thank you for all the great videos

Flip flops became the terror of misbehaving children in certain cultures. You know who you are.

Pronunciation tip on "Havaianas":
"Avayanas"
Say the "A" of "ya" as the "u" in "under". That's how we say it here in Brazil.
And yeah, those white and blue flipflops were the cheapest of the cheap. Sometimes I do wonder how it went from humble footwear to global brand...

I’ve lived in South Florida for 32 years. Ultra laid back casual fashion is at its zenith here. The incredibly hot & humid Summers and the close proximity to the beach has made sandals, open-toed shoes, AND flip flops as common as Pina Coladas poolside.

I never liked wearing flip flops and always thought it was tacky when i saw people wearing them in restaurants. Just looks nasty 🤢

I'm not a fan of flip flops because I don't like the piece that goes between my toes, and I always feel like they are going to fall off my feet. I have two pairs of leather sandals that provide coverage to most of the foot, but still allow my feet to stay cool in the heat.
Tom Jones... Delicious!

Tom Ford once said “No man, no matter what his feet look like, should wear footwear that exposes his feet unless he’s next to a body of water”. I follow that sentiment

I have a life rule: NEVER wear shoes that you cannot run for your life in, or that you cannot fight in.

I know, I'm weird.

Yes; Connery had the style. And Tom Jones "Thunderball" was superb!

I guess almost everything has its time, place or season. Flip Flops are fine at the beach, swimming pool or sitting on the porch on a hot summer day. Out on the town they just don't work, and they bring down whatever else one is wearing.

As a boy growing up in the middle 1960's, I can tell you that NO boy would be caught dead wearing sandals of any kind----it just wasn't done during this era. When we went to the beach or the pool, we either went barefoot or we wore tennis shoes. In the first place, sandals for men and boys were hard to find at the local shoe store. We did know a few rich kids that wore gladiator sandals with brown socks, but after they were jeered at and called 'sissies' a few times by the little boys and girls, they quickly ditched them or they quickly learned how to fight. Most adult men didn't wear sandals either; in fact, the first men we saw wearing sandals were hippies during the acid rock era! I bought my first pair of flip flops in the late 1980's, but I was too embarrassed to wear them in public; however, a girlfriend at the time bought me a pair of huarache sandals and I wore them for years! I loved them because they were cool but still provided plenty of coverage.

As one Hawaiian dude, I always found it interesting looking at the history of the weird/interesting names people of come up with over the years to describe one pair of slippas XD no exception here, so keep up the good work.

I remember that in the 1990’s, GQ magazine wrote that flip flops are only permitted at the beach and no where else. Must have been somewhat during the 2010’s that men lost their dignity with regard to flip flops.

I like flip flops for walking around the house. It's better then a slipper in my opinion.

In Australia flip lips are worn by men year around. We have a more casual culture here, men wear whatever they like. For most of the year it’s too hot to wear enclosed shoes anyway.

There is a difference beteen somebody on Aruba walking in nice leather flip flops and someone from Hungary walking around with white socks and the swimming pool kind of flip flops, in the city center of Berlin, on a cold January day.

Slippers and sandals are more common than sneakers in the Philippines.

Wonder what brand of linen trousers Connery was wearing in that Thunderball scene. He definitely pulled off that outfit quite well. Excellent content as always!
