I was born in San Diego so by the time I was old enough to buy my own ticket to Hawaii I knew very well what they would think of me.... another tourist from the mainland. I sat outside the lineup and just watched a couple cycles go bye. 4 locals hitting their home break and one of em gave me a nod and I was in the lineup getting waves. Respect

I grew up in San Clemente and Oceanside and loved the ocean. 2 summers with the state lifeguards in San Clemente and countless hours in the water doing it all... I knew da rulez.

And I would always clown on the kooks. When I saw a marine from some land locked state flopping on his board, I'd laugh and judge. Looking back, those guys were so stoked. Probably their first time in the ocean, first time riding waves, first time away from home. As someone who considered my home break "my home, " I should've been celebrating with them.

I always tell people go learn at the gulf monster hole is for pros only. You know da rulz.

1- Don't paddle out through the best part of the wave and get in the way. Use the channel.
2- When paddling out don't bail your board when there's someone behind you.
3- The Shoulder Hopper is one who paddles for a wave after someone else is already riding.
4- The Snake paddles behind a person already paddling to claim priority.
5- Beware of the charger coming from behind the peak, he's not a Snake.
6- Priority is a fluid blend of deepest vs furthest out vs first up and is often debated. Deepest usually wins.
