I do love that this scene fantastically establishes Mjolnir's strength and how vital it is to Thor, it perfectly sets up Hela breaking it with ease later.

I love how this scene serialised Thor’s adventures in a way. Like this is just one of hundreds of adventures he’s been on, like stuff like this just happens from time to time. Really makes it feel like old Norse Mythology Thor!

Thor in the MCU is different from Thor in the comics, at least up until when I stopped reading them in the 1990s. MCU Thor speaks differently, is not as strong and is not quite as overwhelming. In the comics the other Avengers sometimes refer to him as Goldilocks because of his long blond hair and will sometimes feel compelled to challenge his strength, but they are also a bit in awe of him too (and Captain America as well). In the comics he actually does come across as a super-super human (a god) among mortals. In the MCU he's often a bit of a clown, but both versions are entertaining.

Notice how Thor waits for his enemies to come to him before fighting Surtur. He wants to fight a couple goons first then the boss.

Also my man didn’t need the hammer to bust out of the chains, he just wanted to wait for it
