Time to settle the debate about bands using backing tracks live once and for all! Is it cheating? Is it okay? Why do some bands need tracks while Foghat didn't use backing tracks in the 70s? We will settle the debate once and for all in this video.

Me: How am I going to be able to get in a video every week this month when I have 27 shows with 6 different bands in July?

Also me: I have an idea! 😅

Side note: 25 of those shows used backing tracks :)

Also, if you do want to watch a longer breakdown of the debate about backing tracks I have a video on that here: Why I'm PRO BACKING TRACKS/LAPTOPS Live for Musicians

But honestly, this video is all you truly need. Do what works best for you 🤘 Thanks for watching everyone! This comment takes longer to read than the video! 😂

I love that this was posted as a normal video and not a short

I'm in a 4 piece band, we don't need a 5th member because we can earn a bit more money, our schedules match, we hang a lot, traveling is easier, stage space is not an issue, we play better with a click track because it makes us practice more to not fail, and only musicians complain, NEVER a client has said anything about it 😉

You can always rely on a backing tracks to turn up to the gig.

As long as the audience can hear clearly all the live instruments. There are some bands that their backing tracks are way louder than the rest and that kinda sucks.

I’ve found your videos immensely rewarding and as a result I’ve embraced the BT concept for my solo pub/social club gigs using ‘multitracker’ and your work around for the separation of click and music. A revelation, thank you. 😊

Starting a new solo project that i want to bring live and im gonna use backing drums but on a beatbuddy so i can have some control over fills and stop start. Should be fun

I consider them enhancements to the overall show and the only negative is other musicians who don’t know how to use them. They should watch your videos!

I play in an 80s cover band. We have a keyboard player who does all the up in your face important lead lines, but any time there is just a super fast arpeggio synth or a super repetitive keyboard line we just throw it in the backtracks. I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that. Would your concert experience really be that much better if our keyboard player was just pressing that one key one thousand times during Kids in America?

❤ best video yet. ❤️
It’s all opinion.
If you think backing tracks are cheating, you’re right!
If you don’t think backing tracks are cheating, you’re right.

We’ve used tracks/clicks/cues at all our live shows for 4 years. The folks on the dance floor having a good time don’t think it’s cheating. The 4 guys in the back of the room with their arms crossed not having a good time think we are cheaters.

We mainly use it to supplement songs where we don’t have live musicians (horns, arpeggiators, pads, and some percussion)

EDIT: this is not actually your best video yet, the 4 part series on Stage Traxx 3 was the best. Thanks for that.

My band is starting to use tracks, but it's some atmospheric stuff and some keys/orchestral elements. We are always going to keep vocals and our instruments live. Except for a few intros or something where there would be guitar or another instrument, which is obviously different...Absolutely NOTHING wrong with it. Hate the argument, " if you can't do it live, then don't do it" nah. I'm not sacrificing my musical ideas for someone's opinion😅

Totally agree Scott, but where is the magic phrase? 😂

I just quit a band that used trax...Only because the only sound completely live was the drums and singer. The excuse was he didn't want the band to sound like a garage band.... lol... It was funny listening to the lead guitar playing with the track lead. Trax are a useful tool if it's not abused, I'll still use Thanks for the videos on how to use trax Scott they helped a lot.
