It would be cheaper to turn the sahara desert into a lush forest with regular rain

I’ve worked in commercial real estate for almost 10 years and most real estate professionals consider a foundation or going vertical as actual construction. Not just moving dirt.

Other people have pointed it out, I am just one of many. But The Line sounds like the setting of a bad YA dystopian novel from the 2010’s.

I think the Saudis who came up with this are big fans of "Snowpiercer ".

I love the concept of this but the undertaking is beyond enormous and the risks are ludicrously high.

just seems to be a waste of money. Is it even going to be affordable for the people living there? I doubt any of those princes are moving in

Looks to me like they are planning for something we don't know, maybe a global event...a full sustainable city in a trench funded by private me 2012(the movie) vibes just saying 😅

Honestly I don’t think it’s economically and socially feasible. Cities throughout history have been circular for a variety of reasons that are easily researched and make sense. Also Saudi has a horrrid human rights record to include killing African immigrants at its southern border regularly. The country should probably improve its existing cities, build more viable ones, and improve things such as education, economic diversification, and perhaps using some influence to help thier Arab brothers and sisters a few hours away encountering mass starvation in Yemen. This all a political ploy with very little input from other than one narcissistic ruler who can’t take criticism for fear of death ( overt or special ops) from those who dare.

In practically it could probably start in sections as an experiment

They have scaled down the line. Looks like they are building it in sections, which is a good idea. My major concern has to do with climate change. Water has no where to go and there have been floods due to climate change. What will they do when 6 inches of rain comes down? It will flood from the ground up. Also, it is going to be without transportation of a personal matter. What will I do if my Mother is sick and she lives 90 miles away? How am I going to get there? Is some AI robot going to strap me on his back and run through the desert to my destination? Also, living there will be expensive. It will be like living in a can of tuna, smell and all -

If this works, I'll be the first to applaud. If it fails, it will be a black mark against the Crown Prince. This isn't the only project. There are several, none of which I will be able to afford and enjoy.

I personally think the money spent on all these projects could be better spent on national security, infrastructure, education, etc.

These projects have nothing to do with oil depletion. It has to do with conpetition. Saudi Arabia is being left behind while their neighbors are advancing their economies with tourism. Egypt has pyramids and King Tut, the UAE has Dubai, and Qatar has a hard to beat sporting venue. Saudi Arabia needs to catch up and they now have a leader that is willing to bend the status quo in order to get it done.

Neom has announced that the Line will be reduced in length from 170 to just 2, 4 km. A reduction of 98, 6%.
This should be finished by 2030, but I doubt they will even achieve this.
It should now house 300.000 people instead of 9.000.000. My guess is that IF this reduced structure is built it will only be inhabited by a fraction of that. Maybe a few thousand.
