For those who may be confused as to why surgery is so pressed about his patients not farting, it's because they need to check for postoperative ileus, which is when the intestinal walls basically stop working. Postoperative ileus is usually associated with abdominal surgery but can occur after other kinds of surgeries as well. It generally fixes itself after 2-3 days, but more severe forms can last longer. Making sure the patient farts or poops are ways to check if the patient is okay.
