A corneal abrasion occurs when you get a scratch in that cornea, which is the clear part of your eye that covers the colored part of your eye. Some causes, anything that can scratch your eye. Fingernails, animal paws, an eyelash getting stuck under your eye, branches from a tree, anything that scratches that cornea can cause a corneal abrasion. So what are the symptoms of red-eyes? Also, you can have pain, pain that's so bad that you hardly want to open the eye. It can really be something that keeps you from wanting to go to work or from being able to study or read. Also, you can get photophobia, meaning that light, especially bright sunlight, can cause extreme pain, photophobia.

Thank you, Dr. Frita. I have been waking up with painful red eyes for years. I was searching online to find a home remedy this morning. Usually, one side at a time, but they both have this issue. I was told I have dry eyes and closed angel glaucoma as well. I am going in for surgery next month and hopefully this issue will be gone.

Finally!!! A better understanding now. Been having dry eye symptoms for past 2-3 years now. Each year has been worsening. Antibacterial Drops seems not to be helping. Plus constant eye boogers ( I call it) throughout the day. This disturbs my ability to see clearly. These boogers creep up and blur my vision and are very noticeable if someone is facing me. At night time this worsens. I have no choice but to wipe my eye to get it out. Yes if clean, finger. But I have stopped doing that and will wipe with my nuckel. I’m sure that’s a negative too! I currently am in progress of seeing a specialist.
