Now that I think about it, was life under the Galactic Empire that bad? There were out-of-the-way planets like Tatooine where you could pretty much get away from their strict control, they didn't set up a surveillance state like the U.S., England, China, etc, And as far as taxation, I don't remember Stormtroopers coming down to Owen and Aunt Beru's place looking for a 40% cut of the water they pulled from the atmosphere. Seems pretty chill unless you're a rebel.
