War on crime: Four alleged Cape Town underworld bosses in court

Stringent security measures were in place at the Western Cape High Court as several of the nation's most prominent alleged underworld figures stood trial separately.

Nafiz Modack and his 14 co-accused are currently on trial, facing a range of charges, including the murder of Anti-Gang detective Charl Kinnear, attempted murder, and extortion.

Meanwhile, Modack's adversaries, Mark Lifman and Jerome Booysen, along with a dozen others, appeared in a different courtroom facing multiple gang-related charges.

Lester Kiewit speaks to Jeremy Veary, former police detective in Mitchells Plain.

I think what would help South Africa is to bring in detectives and trainers from first world countries like the States and Europe. People that are harder to bribe, pay off, and who don't have a vested interest in our country (family, historical ties, etc.) to remove that personal element from the very important task of weeding out as much crime AND corruption at higher levels as possible.

While this is great, we also need to look at the enviro in which such activities are allowed to flourish
- unsuitable urban design that perpetuates criminal activity
- lack of respect for human rights & the law in society, especially the most vulnerable (women, children, destitute, animals)
- a bland media that
- toothless public protection & social justice institutions
- untouchable & corrupt gov & elites setting the wrong example for everyone else
- corrupt criminal justice system
- a sluggish & unresponsive court system
- a harsh prison system that lacks innivation & support
- very little restorative justice & reintegration programs & support

SA is on a very slippery slope... maybe near the bottom?

I'm wondering why alleg gang-bosses, one cannot tire gang with individuals ore groups if there is no strings to it, I can't go get tomatoes at the producers if I go with that tipe of mindset, you go to get tomatoes jot ellegitly getting tomatoes.
