I wanted to sew a garment with french darts for a while now and this dress has this fit feature. See my thoughts and some fitting footage too.

Varda dress by Christine Haynes

Size 14. Brought the side seams in an extra half centimeter. Shortened the length of the dart.

The French dart is my favorite. The first dress I ever made in 1963 hade one and I was sold. Love your dress. You are the best at fitting! Nobody else comes close to your attention to fit and general detail. Bravo!

You are right to make more of this pattern - it is a perfect fit and really flattering and the colour is great on you. Love it.

Oh wow Karina, I love your dress! I am still looking for a style that suits my figure and my lifestyle and I reckon the Varda will tick all the right boxes. I love your vlogs, your tutorials, hacks/improvements are never wasted on this lady!! I am making the Colette Laurel out of a cotton lawn print and am going to line it with a plain cotton lawn as it is slightly see through. It will also give it some extra body as it is fine. I need sleeves (self conscious of bingo wings 😆) but will keep it as unfussy as possible. Less is more as you say! Thank you for sharing your beautiful dress and I shall download the Varda for sure! x

So did you fold the bias binding over so it is not visible or on the other hand does it show on the arm scythe (not sure this is the right spelling).

Love the dress and fabric. I have done French darts but not that often. I have a tummy so sometimes I don't include the darts.

The neckline finish is so pretty! I love how French darts provide such good shaping but are not so obvious as typical darts. I think that's good reasoning too with choosing a simple style for a red dress--red is so much for me, that I will always go for a less daring style if I find myself in a position where I need to wear red! But red is SO your color!

I LOVE it, it looks great on you and you have fitted it so well! As a beginner, my 'technique' is to make it up 'as is', and alter it to fit when it's finished . . . not great! I did a French dart on a 'pullover' top when I first started sewing, and, as always, just put the dart where it was on the pattern . . . I wore it once, but it looks too boxy for my liking. Great tip for the bias binding, I will have to give that a go! TFS xx

Karina, Your dress is beautiful! I had a question about the neckline, it’s lower than the pattern shows. How did you do this change? Thank you for all your great videos!

I agree that you really did a perfect job on lowering the dart. I absolutely love that color on you. Even though this is a simple dress, because of your fabric choice and the fit it looks fabulous.
