Recorded in the Miryhall of the Ghent Music Faculty, using a Zoom Q3 (sound) and a Zoom Q3HD (video).

Just imagine hearing this amazing music while sitting as a freezing prisoner in a Nazi Stalag prisoner of war camp. That's where he composed it and it was performed by fellow prisoner musicians. So powerful. Epic.

J'ai eu la chance d'assister à une représentation de l'œuvre de Messiaen et ce passage était l'un des plus magiques, les nuances du violoncelle sont sublimes

This is my favorite performance on the internet of this wonderful piece of music. I especially like the piano, which is really well done, not just underlining the gorgeous cello part, but giving it a somewhat late accent. Beautiful. Well done!

I was lucky enough to see this entire work performed live on the 15th anniversary of September 11th (at Constellation Chicago) and came here seeking other versions. I am very happy to discover the Warped Time Ensemble. This movement is the one that really melts my heart with its delicacy and sadness. 75 years after its strange premiere, I suspect it will remain a classic long after we're gone. Thank you for keeping music like this in our ears!

I find this interpretation absolutely stunning, exactly the proportions I would wait. The Warped Time ensemble shows an outstanding maturity. This is exactly the Joy, the contained Joy of the After The World, the inner Joy, the Joy of contemplation. Olivier Messiaen was a PoW in Germany, forbidden to write music, when he composed this in 1940-5. He found the peace of mind amidst the chaos. Maybe is it hard to enjoy. Thank you, LukasHuisman for this marvelous cycle of musical videos.

Love the tempo choice. Suits the meoldic lines perfectly and gives that first climax that heart rending climax that makes this my favourite movement.

It's as if you're observing from a distance (or from above) a situation of sad derangement unfolding. A kind of self-protective out of body perspective on a terrible situation.

When you think about it, it's totally extraordinary that they had exactly the right creative conditions at the prison camp; and it was premiered outside and in the drizzle....!

There used to be an old Philips recording - Maurice Gendron and Jean Françaix - on youtube but it's no longer there. This live performance is a good alternative though. The music conjures up visions of timeless and infinite landscapes, tranquil and peaceful. A work to cherish.

This is a very complicated piece of music with a lot of background required to appreciate it of course not very appealing if you don’t have that background. Don’t trash something just because you don’t understand it. There is a certain agonising beauty to this piece.

bravi, but be careful with the piano, sometimes the sound is to hard

@oberon240678 Your comment "no one is needing it! don't bother again" is a hasty generalization. I find that many who don't appreciate this style of music haven't studied the background of it and why we even have it. Perhaps, you ought to just listen to more simple minded music.

You don't have to tell me that -- you say it already to the world. Just part of what makes you boring.

It was completely subjective to the composer, and how not? If you can go with it and take the suggestion into your hearing of it, fine -- if not, just listen. I don't think it will take away from the sublimity of it.
