I really enjoy this laptop. It works perfect for my needs of traveling with a VR headset. Perfect number of ports to support the rift; plus doesn't add huge weight (i would say no weight if you are trying to compare to my desktop rig) to my VR setup loaded up (4 sensors, 4 adjustable camera pod, the headset and all the cords). Battery life gets a decent two hours, which for me catching up on web browsing or youtube is more than enough for anywhere i may not have ready access to a power plug. It does get hot if you try to play games with it in your lap not with light workloads and most games you would want a mouse and flat surface anyway. As far as noise goes, if you have been heating it up for a good amount you can hear the fans going but compared to all other laptops that have had any kind of power I'd say it's about 1/4th as loud to me. Best example I can give is I can use the onboard speakers at 60% and the fan noise doesn't distract from the ambiance of the game, where other laptops I've played with almost require noise canceling headphones to stay "in-game" (unless your playing flight simulators where loud fan noises add to the realism).
As for the power it packs, I can play all games on max settings and haven't noticed any difference or downside in real world play compared to my desktop 1080 gpu. I actually prefer playing Doom on this instead of my desktop since the display is so much nicer than the 4k tv I used as a monitor on my desktop. In fact having played Arizona Sunshine in VR on a 1070 desktop graphics card where "medium" settings were about the balance between play-ability and quality, where the 1080-maxQ plays just as well on high settings as my 1080 desktop card does. Anyway this suited my needs perfectly and my family and friends appreciate the being able to play VR games and experiences where none of them would even have a desktop system capable of playing if I only brought the VR gear.
If you sit around using it to run benchmarks all day, sure i'd recommend getting something else. If you want something you can travel with easily and also get desktop level graphics and game play out of it this one is a good choice.
Side note: I really like the sleek look of the device overall and the only thing I would prefer to change on it is the red lights on the bottom when you have it plugged in. And the keyboard placement really isn't that bad at all when on your lap (not to say it doesn't take some adjustment time), but I use it to code on without any issues in the car traveling.

So when is the Ryzen version coming out?

Yo the channel branding watermark is so small and faint that I didn't even realize you had one until now. Put the little cube logo there instead :)

You forgot to review the battery performance?

I do like the idea of Max-Q, and the specs for this laptop look great but I just can't get over the price. Also i don't like the bronze ish color that laptop has going around the keyboard area. Great review though

I currently have an ASUS 17.3 inch display. Will I miss the extra 1.6 inch difference by switching to a 15.6?

TEMPERATURE question: Can you game and place on your lap without burning yourself? Same question, but comparing to Gigabyte Aero 15x.

Vega + Ryzen laptop let's go. On second note, Rx 570/580 + Ryzen might be a more sensible combo for a laptop, power consumption and all.

I really want one of these for no good reason other than it's cool. :p

Nice review, these have got a lot of negative press, and whilst I agree the marketing is a bit weird it's still a fantastic product and clearly more appealing than a standard 1080 laptop. Who wouldn't trade 10%-20% loss in performance for half the weight, cooler running and MUCH quieter whilst gaming?

I’m
Worried about the bottom mechanics lifting like that. Seems it could break

Can you guys maybe review some cheap korean 1440p monitors? Like Qnix 2710, which is officialy clocked at 120hz but people claim they can be overclocked to 120hz. PLS screen, which is the samsung version of IPS. I bought one and it should come here next week, but I think it's an interesting one for allot of budget orientated people.

I think these new Max-Q gpus are really pointless without, at least, decent battery life to go along with it. At $2700-2800, why wouldn't I just buy the $1600 GL502VS that is slightly thicker with similar performance for the most part?
If G-sync is making it impossible to implement Nvidia optimus then remove it. The portability and battery life is what I should be paying for given the performance and the portability alone isn't worth an extra $1200.

You'd have to be a user with some pretty specific requirements to justify buying a laptop at this price. Personally I'd rather save a grand and buy a more powerful desktop and spend whatever is left on a laptop that can do everything else with the possibility of light gaming.
But I do admit I don't like laptop gaming so I'd never buy this either way

I still don't know why they put a GTX 1080 on a laptop with a 1080p screen. But I guess if you hook up a 1440p or 4 k monitor then that would make more sense I guess.
