Arthur Schopenhauer, On The Basis of Morality | Skepticism About Genuine Morality | Core Concepts

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Arthur Schopenhauer's work On The Basis of Morality. It examines the reasons he presents for people being skeptical about the existence of genuine morality. Schopenhauer does not think that these are ultimately correct or convincing, but he does view them as needed to be taken seriously.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

I respect how charitably you present philosophers in your videos

He was the first major western philosopher to take eastern philosophy seriously, and presented a point of cohesion between both. I love the most among philosophers .

It would be interesting to compare Arthur Schopenhauer's morality and Hobbes' social contract theory.

I figure you are stretched to your limits with this channel, but do you ever plan to do anymore Schopenhauer? Specifically, World as Will and Representation? Thanks for all your videos!

Does philosophy ever overwhelm you? Cause you to doubt everything?
I've wondered if things I've done to be of service to others wasnt just me wanting to feel better about myself, and lessen my guilt and shame. Or about wanting others to like me. Especially after a video like this I just feel like a selfish conniving rat. The philosophy can be a bit too much for me often times. It's hard to really know. All this sense of individuality is really a sham anyways. Why must us humans be cursed with so much illusions to bear and sift through. it's why Buddhism resonated with me more.. i really feel like to have a mind is to be everyday besieged by illusion and assumption and the history of man is a lunacy that reflects this. I guess this is a negative thing to say.
It's just a really strange and ambiguous world and we are very flawed at ascertaining this already enigma. Sometimes philosophy can help to illuminate this confusion but sometimes it deepens it, by revealing the chasm of my own ignorance wider. So I often avoid philosophy because it scares me
