Calling the 9800X3D disappointing when only seeing 3 game tests, on which one is a nice 11% improvement and one is heavily GPU bottlenecked, is very disingenuous.

The thing about the 9800X3D slides is that they are gpu limited in black myth wukong. Making cpu comparsions in a gpu limkted scenario does not really make sense. And if they make simple mistakes like that on black myth there is no reason to belief that the other two games are cpu limited, as you can only compare cpu performance in an cpu limited scenario.

Edit: The shadow of the tombraider benchmark is also most likely gpu bottlenecked. In hardware unboced initial review of the 7800X3D he got 330 fps on 1080p with a 4090. This is way too high compared to the slides and im 100% sure that the hardware unboxed result is cpu bound. So while black myth is 100% gpu bound and tomb raider is like 90% gpu bound there is only one result which might be cpu bound but thats not really conclusive anyway. We just have to wait for reviews.

With 32 GB the 5090 will be huge for content creation, i can imagine it hitting 2k. People who make money with their computer will pay more...

The people who expect a 5 year performance jump from the 7800X3D to 9800X3D who only have 1 year apart gap are nuts

Those MSi slides also indicated that MSi felt that performance would be substantially faster on the release CPU's, likely because those benchmarks were with an engineering sample or they were for validation purposes. Regardless, it doesn't seem like MSi felt they were representative of how these chips will perform. So... as usual, they should have been taken with a grain of salt.

Really? This is the model that‘s supposed to lift our disappointment to impressed, well that was a bit disappointing.

One side of your mouth said "this game is gpu bound" while the other said "9800x3d doesn't look like it offers performance improvements". Every game presented in those leaked slides that weren't gpu bound showed pretty healthy uplifts, wukong caps at around 60fps regardless of what cpu you use.

4080 was sitting in shelves all across the world when it was priced $1200, it started to sell good with the $4080 super at $1000.

good thing i chose a 7800X3D early this year

Though to be fair, Ryzen 9000 is still a good platform, just not when you're upgrading from the previous generation, which I feel was always the case with CPUs.

I had my i7 7700k for like 6 or 7 years. If I had upgraded that 2 or 3 times in that timespan it would've been a waste of money, especially with socket changes.

The 5070 having only 12GB of VRAM is an absolute joke.

Oh thank God, I was so worried that we weren't going to have a power hog. Winter is coming and I need a space heater

I think there is a general sentiment in tech rn where upgrading every generation is over and has been over for a while. But seeing these leaked benchmarks. If you're on a 5800x3d rn and haven't upgraded yet. Do you even consider upgrading? It feels a lot like how people that bought M1 macs just don't bother upgrading atp. I am undecided on if this is a good or a bad thing.

I'm 100% expecting the 5090 to be over $2K. Remember it's Nvidia we'e talking about here. The same company that had the 80 class price go from $700-$800 to $1200 in a single generation.

picked my 7800x3d up a couple months back for 300$ man im so happy right now.

I think we all need to accept the days of huge IPC uplifts are over and the next wave will be performance per watt. The dies have been shrunken about as far as you can go without electron leakage, adding more cores is a dead end as most apps can't use them all, and faster RAM will quickly reach diminishing returns due to limits on the traces. But the one area where big gains can be made is PPW, look at how much power the Zen 1 APUs drew compared to Strix.

I wouldn't be surprised if MSI deliberately chose to "leak" performance on games with disappointing results considering how they treated the Radeon lineup. I'm not saying that the results are fake, but it is weird that they only tested 3 games, 2 of which nobody will buy a new CPU for, and one that's GPU bound.

Looks like Intel and AMD both worked on lower power usage for performance looks like next gen will be the sweet spot by adding the performance back.

Thanks for another slice of good news!

I didn't think the 9800x3d will be bad. This version is supposed have better clocking, better dynamic speed and voltages, which should make it run cooler.also before amd stated other features being introduced in this version of 3d cache. I bet there going need be windows updates, drivers, or Bios changes enabling to have it performed optimal. Also each time when 3d cache has come out it shown it needed the next teir cards for it to pull ahead.

I was more hoping for strix halo with a unitifed 3d cache for the gpu and cpu. Maybe next generation we will get that.

9800X3D is still faster than the 7800X3D in gaming, just by a very moderate amount, and in productivity? Its 30% faster than the 7800X3D in Cinebench multicore! 9800X3D is faster in single core productivity workloads than the 7800X3D as well according to benchmarks by over 10%. Don't count out the 9800X3D at all.

Intel Arrow Lake is mostly a regression from Raptor Lake Refresh. Yes a huge jump in power efficiency, but equal or less performance, less clock speed, no Hyperthreading? I would rather get an Intel Core i9 14900KS. Core Ultra 9 needs a 295K (KS) variant to have any hope against Zen 5 X3D in gaming.

However, IMO the gaming king to watch for is easily the Ryzen 9 9950X3D releasing alongside NVIDIA's Blackwell graphics cards (AKA RTX 5090) at CES 2025. Why? Simple answer, all CCD's enabled with 3D-VCache!!!
