Repairing A Tear In A Leather Sofa

A friend had recently bought a new (second hand) leather sofa, which got a tear in the leather during delivery. In this video we'll repair the damage so the sofa can be used without risking the tear getting bigger, plus making it look visually better.

For this project I used a leather repair kit made by Coconix, consisting of coloured leather filler/glue which can be mixed to get the best colour match, some backing material to strengthen the joint, a spatula and so on.

The repair was quite large and needed to be tackled in small stages, so the process might look quite drawn out, but I've attempted to cut out most of the irrelevant bits, whilst still trying to give enough information to help anyone thinking of attempting a similar repair.

I know I promised links to some of the products I used for this repair, but I had so much trouble with Amazon affiliate links that I ended up removing them, but a simple search for "Coconix Leather Repair", either on Amazon or just a general search, should get you the same product.

I bought this kit and also have had very good results with a pretty big repair. Thanks for the video, it was a big help.

Great Job, Tim. I enjoy a bit of leather crafting so I found this really interesting as I would have had no idea where to start on something like this (My leather crafting is somewhat restricted to wallets and Doll's shoes). Great Video, Mate.

Nice video. I really like the way you showed the actual products you were going to use in the video. The repair ended up looking quite good actually.

I think the trick is to open the door and push the sofa through the frame, rather than pushing it through the door... (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Good repair, thanks for showing us how.

I watched your video, an ordered a repair kit. Did 1 of three repairs on my chair. However, the glue paint is not the same color as the chair it is so off. Can using a wax or leather cleaner help to tone down the difference? Its on the foot rest.

Terrific job! You made it look so easy (but I bet it isn't)

No need to use a piece of material under the leather. Stitch the leather flap together, apply filler, recolour.

What would you do if the tear goes all the way to the seam?

Very tidy repair! I bet that filler tends to get everywhere.

Ok for a home diy repair, not a professional job. firstly you can see the repair line, the filler needs to be level with the original leather secondly the colour is a bad match, getting the colour spot on with any leather repair is critical for a near invisible repair.

Oh man, what a crappy repair. I'm an amateur but my repairs are way better than yours. Sorry, but I'm just being honest. You needed to pull the gaps tight and not leave gaps.
