I did that drill a few times on my RYA "Competent Crew' course. If I was going to take up sailing I would look for more advanced courses and do more practice. Like how to get an unconsious body out of the water and how to deal with rougher sea's.

Just a note that putting the boat into irons is not a "controlled approach". Approaching the victim at a close reach allows you to both luff the sails to stop as well as haul them in if you are stopping short.
