I once built a sound proof room for recording music, and I setup up the cooling this way. I snaked the ducting around with some insulation so that it was quiet by the time it got inside the room. It’s certainly not the best for efficiency but it does work for sound isolation.

A muffler has one job; to muffle the sound of thousands of explosions per minute as long as it does this what more does it need to do.

That right there is the longest lasting muffler. Glass pack ones either burn out or simply clog up turning them into straight pipes and rendering them useless for the task.

Surprisingly the muffler doesn't obstruct much exhaust gas...the catalytic converter is the biggest obstruction

Thanks to Percy Maxim, the "muffler was created" right. The same one who patent the "silencer" for gunshot suppression. So now you have to pay $200.°° for a tax stamp for one (USA) and wait for the approval. But if you drove a vehicle around without a muffler, you get a citation for it. 🤔🤔🤔 so taxed to have one then taxed if you don't have it.

Lots of engineering goes into those details. What looks cheap and simple might be simply genius engineering.

Congratulations! You figured out how a muffler works. They are designed to add some back pressure for the engine to run more efficiently. Just replace it already and send the customer on their way.
