Repairing the power supplies out of three discarded office computers - to great success! We also test one of them, and play with the infamous proprietary ESR meter.

In short, replace one capacitor. The obviously broken one.

Nice job! I have two Delta PSUs from old Dell machines which are both in perfect working order, and one of them is circa 2007/2008. I use it for powering server fans and tinkering, and a really nice feature in both of these PSUs is the inclusion of trim pots to fine tune the 12v output. By comparison, I have a CWT 405W PSU that puts out 11.8v on the 12v rail and goes right down to the bare acceptable 11.4v under load, thanks to the UVP. No sign of bad caps anywhere... the CWT unit is just very bare with a single DIP 8 chip (PS113) to control the output.

A power supply that you don't have to take the board out and desolder a bunch of wires and shit to service?? Incredible!

Those power supplies seem like a pretty clean design.

I've got an ever deepening pile of power supplies with bad caps. I just can't bring myself to fight off all the glue inside most of them.

Damn. Really do love the look of those machines on the outside. definitely a good designer for the front panel of the case on the job for them.
but, looks like your standard MicroATX machine inside from that era-- some will say this is a good thing. never did like the vertically-mounted drives some machines like this have though, and HP is another which to this day makes use of that-- especially in the very low-end US$300 or less systems you buy from brick and mortar walmart/staples/office depot stores here in the US which make use of a 40mm-cooled laptop Pentium CPU on a Mini-ITX board inside. IMHO the vertical mounting makes for a bit more stress on the drive motor due to gravity, but the forces acting upon it and the wear induced aren't noticeable for a long, long time, assuming the hard drive lasts that long anyway.

What do those types of noises usually indicate? My father's PC has a Corsair branded Delta unit in his machine that whines when the PC is off but it hasn't caused any issues for the last 3 years it has been installed in it. Should I still consider replace the unit?

Well done, crappy cap syndrome.
For a second i thought that supply was the cheap-n-nasty "Bestec" brand, the opto couplers and that dodgy cap looked in the same place as the bestec type.

? what is the device that interfaces with the screen in order to measure capacitors, you mentioned it perhaps in another video?
Oh another question, not sure you can answer, but is there a way to raise the 12 volt rail on a PS to say 14 volts so I could charge 12volt lead acid batteries. I have power supplies everywhere, none less than 750 watts lol

Do you have an special Setting that allows you to test with your PC/Laptop or is a software the one you use on this video ?

Those Delta PSU's are sketchy in my experience.
