Welcome back to Wildwestfaces, In this episode we look at Native American cowboys.
During the 1870s, Indian cowboys played a role in the great cattle drives that moved through Texas. These were iconic events in American old west history, and it was common to find at least one Indian cowboy participating in each drive. This representation highlights the diverse contributions to the cowboy culture that often go overlooked.

The transition of many Native Americans into the role of cowboys was not only logical but also a necessary adaptation to changing circumstances. As tribes were forced onto reservations, their traditional nomadic lifestyles came to an end. With this shift, the role of the warrior diminished, and the cowboy grew.

Native Americans were exceptional horsemen, renowned for their skills and understanding of animals. Their connection with nature and the outdoors made them well-suited for the demands of herding cattle. They brought knowledge and amazing horsemanship to the cattle drives.

It's unfortunate that more photographs and documentation of these Indian cowboys don’t exist, as their stories and contributions deserve to be celebrated and remembered.

I’m glad that you’re bringing the truth about these Native Americans to everyone and getting rid of the old, trite stereotypes, showing the diversity of their lives.

Traveled the western states a week ago from Michigan to Idaho. Clipped the corner of Utah. Oregon, Montana. The northern rim of Yellowstone. The wide open prairie of Wyoming and Nebraska. Mt Rushmore and the Badlands of South Dakota. The majesty and vast open land and sky is beyond the description of our United States ! Quite literally a bucket list item for all to take in the natural bueaty, stunning views of our blessed land. Anyone questioning about being proud to be an American direct them a national park or an airshow!

The Seminoles in Florida have lots of cattle, have had for years! I knew some personally, and worked cows with them a few times. Stanlo Johns, and Joe Tiger were a couple of their names!

No matter what they did, still forced on reservations & doled out rations. No way to live. I can see why some died fighting.
And if this situation is repeated here today, the Indians will be the top survivors.
The background of the making of Dances w Wolves is fascinating. Costner got Indian rodeo riders to go after the buffalo, dead run. He said they looked like they’d been doing it all their lives.

У индейцев, в основном, мужественные красивые лица! А белые часто предпочитали в жены индианок.

Just want to point out the coboy culture has roots south of the border, Mexicans, and Mexican Natives were the first cowboys as they inherited from Spain.

Years ago I read a book on the history of the American cowboys. In it were many photographs of trail driving crews. In them you could see Mexicans, Native Americans and Negros. Sometimes it was hard to find a white man! And - not a gun sight!

I can't imagine what they went through. Having to adopt to another culture and leaving your own on your own land must be devastated

They used them for great riding. Butcakso. After the Civil War there just were not enough adult males left alive in the southwest
