Doctor Who: Paradise Towers - Rejected Soundtrack
A short track composed by David Snell in 1987 for Paradise Towers. Variations on this composition appeared around moments featuring the Cleaning robots.
Producer John Nathan-Turner rejected the full score citing reasons such as he found it monotonous.

Very interesting here, given I gather Snell was more used to composing with an orchestra rather than a synth it sounds very threatening.

For me it's always seemed like David Snell's soundtrack is a lesson in knowing how to compose music doesn't necessarily translate into knowing how to synth. It just sounds too raw, too gratuitous. Malcolm Clarke could at times work wonders with that kind of cacophonous sound, but he was practically meshed with synthesisers. Snell just comes across as inexperienced. I'm not much of a fan of McCulloch but his bouncy comic book style is immediately more pleasant on the ears.

Paradise Towers is a shame overall because it's such a dark and menacing storyline, but the production just doesn't try to do it any justice. I can't imagine what we got was the cyberpunk dystopia Stephen Wyatt was picturing in his head when penning it. It makes me wonder what Dominic Glynn (who for my money was at that point their most talented composer) could have made of the serial? He did creepy vibes incredibly well.

Not gonna lie I can see why JNT rejected this, it sounds like a little kid playing on a synthesizer

Very classic sounding Doctor Who score - like The Sea Devils or something. Doesn’t work for Paradise Towers, though - and neither did Keff’s score. I’m saying this as a huge fan of Season 24 and a fair-weather defender of Keff. Musically, Paradise Towers needed someone to invent Vaporwave 30 years before it would even have made sense as a style. Honestly they should have just grabbed some K-Mart background music tapes and just abused the hell outta them. I’m not wrong.
