Exploring Mexico's Hidden Underworld | Cenote Diving

There are hundreds of cenotes in Mexico and each is unique. But after spending weeks diving a dozen different cenotes, what stood out to me were four elements running through them all: Water, Light, Stone, and Jungle.

A hidden river runs underneath Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Cenotes are sinkholes in the jungle floor that reveal passages to a secret world. Decorated with stone formations older than mankind, this is the largest submerged cave system in the world.

To the very earliest inhabitants of the the Americas cenotes were a source of shelter during the ice age. To the Mayans they were both a crucial source of freshwater and an entrance to the underworld. To modern explorers they offer the opportunity for new discovery. Oh and let's not forget they are a major tourist attraction and revenue source across the Riviera Maya.

I first learned about cenotes from a little girl who told me she went to one with her father and i had no clue what she was talking about so here i am fascinated

There are northern cenotes too! If you get a chance, check out the Blue Hole of Santa Rosa in New Mexico. No jungle but an absolutely incredible spot.
