It's not just old people who wait for someone to say hello there. 56 years, and I still love to hear someone say hello 👋

What a vision this man had! So glad he left us something to remember him by and to treat other people to what he left for US. Boomer Babe here

One of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard. One of John’s best.

The brilliance of this song is that it will stick with people their whole lives, in terms of providing a relative and meaningful & personal outlook on aging. I first heard it as a teenager when it first came out and it actually had an impact on me on how I would, or should acknowledge and feel about older folks. I've carried that feeling with me through the decades, and now that I'm an older folk, it has the same meaningful impact on me, but now from the opposite perspective than it did in the early 70's. Especially since I contiune to play and sing this song myself to this day. In my mind, it is one of the greatest, and certainly most enduring songs ever written. For those of us lucky enough to have found John Prine early in our lives, we've had this absolute master songwriter of everyday life & the human condition to provide a meaningful backing track to own journey through life, with all of his great songs. Thank you, John Prine...RIP ❤

I listened to this in the early ‘70s, and I’m now of the age where I wouldn’t mind someone saying “hello in there!”

John was quoted as saying he thinks that this is the best song he every wrote. Hard to pick but I have to agree. I'm a big better man for having John in my heart and soul

Very, very well done. One of John’s true gems. A song with a clear message that I hope lives on and on.

I don't know how John Prine wrote songs that so clearly mirrowed life, but he did. John sings about things that connect like a bolt of electricity in our brain. We have a visceral reaction like when after decades we suddenly catch a whiff of the hair tonic that our grandpa used 50 years ago. Deja vu all over again.

He had a way of writing lyrics that were real life set to music.

We'll all pass on, but until we do, let's live our purpose, not our age.
