How To Unclog Toilet Without a Plunger using Dish Soap! (Updated)

In today's video I show you how to unclog toilet without a plunger. As well as unclog toilet with dish soap and hot water method. I have been using this hack for about 10 years with great success. If you do not have a plunger available, this method works great as all it takes is some dish soap and a bowl.

Step one is to take your dish soap and pour a generous amount in. I usually do about one cup full. Then let it sit in your toilet for a minimum of 45 minutes, but 90 minutes is ideal. The majority of the time, the dish soap will unclog the clog within this 90 minute window and you will hear it flush on it's on.

If it does not unclog, proceed to step two. Take some hot water from your faucet (not boiling) and slowly pour it into the toilet in a circular motion. Let the hot water sit in the toilet for 30 minutes.

If after 30 minutes, your toilet is still not unclogged, flush the toilet. It is recommended to have the same bowl next to your toilet in the event the clog did not clear and your toilet starts to overflow. You can use the bowl to remove the water as it is filling up.

This is my second video on how to unclog a toilet without a plunger. My first video has helped almost 800k people according to the comments and I wanted to make an updated video for 2022 and explain a few more additional tips and explain why this method works so well.

If you found this video helpful, please give it a like, feel free to comment (I respond to all comments) and subscribe for more future informative videos!

Dear JMG, as a professional crapper, I know about plugged toilets. Recently I spent almost an hour trying to clear a mastodon sized dump. I was so aggravated that I turned to YouTube for ideas. Came across your channel and decided to give it a try. I would be holding back if I said you are brilliant. Worked like a charm. Thank from the bottom of my….. let’s just say heart. Great tip sir!!!

As a poor college student who is convinced that he has one of the worlds weakest toilets, this technique has now never failed me. Thank you for blessing my recommendations 🙏🏼

I started off plunging. That usually does the trick. Not this time. Broke out the auger. Came to a dead end and scraped up the porcelain. Still no luck. I had some Dawn 5x spray under the sink. Poured the entire bottle into the toilet. Must have been around 30 minutes when I heard the GLUG...GLUG. I didn't even have to pout the hot water in. But did anyway. Wish I new this trick years ago. Truly amazing! A huge thanks to you sir! 👍

I'm so glad I came across this video! As a single woman with only one bathroom, I wouldn't know what I would have done without it. I'm extremely grateful because otherwise I would have had to wait until morning. Thank you so much for sharing this, it means a lot to me.

Thanks! My wife was cleaning up the mess our dog made and she used a whole roll of toilet paper before she flushed. Needless to say she clogged the toilet and even the plunger didn't work. Being a Sunday night stores were closed and no way of buying a snake late night. I figured I could search Youtube and found your solution. I was a bit unbelieving it would work but didn't have anything to loose so I tried it. About 30 minutes later success! I'm glad that's all behind us! Thanks again!

JMG, my boy, you saved me. I was plunging for a straight hour with no results, in pure frustration and no stores open, i checked trusty youtube for some tips so i could fix the issue before my roomates had to use the bathroom😂poured a bunch of dishsoap in, accidentally put the hot water in at the same time, let it sit for 15 minutes, tried flushing, no results. pulled out the plunger one last time in pure desperation, gave it about 5 pumps and it all flushed. The relief i felt was even greater than the relief i got when i first sat on the toilet. We appreciate your services🙏🏼

This just saved Thank YOU! My daughter clogged our toilet 3 days ago and we tried plunging, snaking, some store bought liquid, baking soda + vinegar. Nothing worked until I tried this. I didn’t even have to get to the hot water pour part. Just dish soap for about 5-10 minutes. 🎉🎉

On 8/7/24 my wife and I panicked because the toilet 🪠 plunger was not doing what it normally should. My wife found this site and individual on YouTube. Thank you, thank you! Saved us a huge plumbing expense. Followed directions exactly and our toilet works like a charm!

I'm actually sort of amazed that what you recommended worked so well. I didn't have any Dawn detergent but I decided to just try the cheaper stuff I had. I poured about a cup into the commode. Waited the 45 minutes you suggested and then put about a gallon of hot water in on top of the soap. It didn't do anything! I flushed it and it didn't work. I thought I would have to wait until I could make it to the store to get some Dawn and then as I was busy somewhere else, I heard that BEAUTIFUL sound of the commode flushing. I went in and it was totally unblocked! My sincerest thanks for saving me a BUNCH of money on a plumber.

My 84+ mom told me about this genius suggestion a year ago. Worked great. For the person who commented about big 💩 I found pouring a cup of bleach in the bowl and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

This is a Truck driver’s embarrassment saver. I had the hotel room from hell. I had already complained and then asked for towels to clean my own bathroom tub, floor, and sink. Yes I could have moved but I was on the first floor and my truck was parked right near my window. After all that I used the bathroom and the damn toilet clogged…Lmao I was like these people are gonna kick me out. So instead of going to ask for a plunger or complaining again & waiting for help I came to YouTube university. I always have my own dish soap for cleaning so I tried this trick.
I thought it didn’t work at 1st. I put the soap in then waited and put the hot water in. (6 ice buckets of hot water) The first 3 times I flushed it didn’t go down. After hearing that it could take 90 minutes or so I went to sleep and when I woke up I flushed and wow it worked!!!! Thank you for doing this updated video!

It took much longer than expected but it worked. My new bathroom got seriously clogged because it's an old house.
Yesterday, Spent $94 going to walmart shopping for Drano, baking soda 4Kg and Vinager 8L, also a plunger and even snake drain auger. None of them work. I was going to call my landlord but knowing it may take 1~2 days to arrive, was going to call a plumber but service in my area is $200 minimum.
Tried your method with the only Palmolive green dishwasher I have as spare and didn't work the first time. Pour hot water, then put 1/4 of the dishwasher bottle in the toilet, wait 30 minutes, pour hot water. Didn't flush. I used plunger for 1 minute. Nothing happened.
Pour hot water again and it fill out toilet because clogged remained.
Was going to call plumber and decided to try one more time. Put 1/3 of the bottle this time and left it whole night. Then when I use bathroom in the morning, didn't flush but noticed it sucked in all remains within 1 minute. It must be working. Then pour some hot water and it went thru right away.
Tried for the 3rd time, pour hot water, then immediately pour 1/3 of dishwasher, waited 2 hours. then pour hot water again and a nasty smell came up and some waste matter even came back, waited 1 more hour and then it flushed successfully, Tried a few more times in a row just to make sure. I'm saved.
Next, put some more dishwasher in the toilet and will repeat steps one more time just in case to make sure this nasty clogged is totally clear. Just Ordered some 4L Palmolive and 4L Dawn bottles from amazon.
Thank you so much for your video, it's a lifesaver.
To the people thinking it doesn't work, here's an advise for you, be patient and don't give up so easily!.

DUDE!!! Worked like a charm. I didn't have regular Dawn; just the fancy PowerFoam kind. I sprayed a bunch in the toilet and waited until I couldn't wait anymore🤣😂 I held my breath & flushed and voila!! It worked! I started doing the happy dance 💃🏾💃🏾 Thank you so much.

Thank you! Your method worked! Saved us $ getting a plumber in. We live in one of those old apartment blocks with apparently narrow pipes. As precaution : 1) we never buy 3 ply toilet paper anymore 2) stop throwing tissues into the toilet 3) I know it sounds gross but unless I do a poop I throw the toilet paper into a bin instead and clear it daily. Women use a lot of toilet paper and it’s usually paper that clogs the toilet.

OMG...this worked! Use plenty of soap and be patient like he recommended. Follow his directions. I had to use the flange plunger for a few times after letting the hot water work with the soap but it finally cleared. I will never be without Dawn dish soap as long as I'm living in this old house. Thank you so much!
