Advanced tip: The fairing base can also be attached upside-down at the top of a craft, using an interstage node to connect the fairing base to the rest of the craft. This can be very helpful sometimes, like making a large "payload bay" with a super large bottom and better aerodynamics. But getting it to work requires using the change root node button a couple of times.

Hundreds of hours in and never knew this. I love this tip!

My mind just melted. That button. That ONE button I've always seen but was too scared to touch. No way.

Alternative tip: place a docking port on the top node instead. Put the escape system on top and use radially mounted parachutes instead. Not only does the docking port act as a decoupler for the escape system, but it also adds extra utility to your ship. Radially mounted parachutes are great and work just as well as the others just make sure not to confuse the main chutes and the drogue chutes.

My orbital vehicles all served as space tugs with a 2.5m docking port on the bottom and a 1.25 on the top. I used radial engines and had a fairing covering the orbital stage. The launch escape system would connect over the top docking port and then I would have the fairing connect to the bottom of that at an angle. It was a very cool system.

I thought you were gonna show us how to use radial chutes but i never knew that

I finally know what that truss structure is all about. Thanks!

300+ hours and I just now learned this

Oh my god. I have 300 hours in this game and I've always wondered if you could put a parachute and a dock on top, I ld always resorted to putting the parachutes radially to put the dock on top instead. This is a literal game changer

I think this is the most informative and useful YTShort I've ever seen. Thanks Mike! You're a KSP Legend (and soon to be a ReEntry Legend!)

WHAT?! Omg, I needed this 300 hours ago, but thank you so much!

I do this the other way around where the LES is above the fairing, and the fairing faces down. I then just attach a decoupler to the fairing (also facing down) and put the stack on top of the capsule. Then I move the stack up with the offset tool. Now I can build the fairing around the capsule and basically have a detachable LES shroud like Apollo or Orion.

I have been playing ksp since 2012 and only now learned about interstage nodes

Advanced tip, add the actual fairing part onto an engine base thingy, I forgot what it’s called, connect that to the parachute, put the fairing on top and style it to your liking, then put the LES on top

This is much nicer than clipping in a radial parachute

The way I do it is to put a decoupled on top of the pod, put radial chutes (at least 3) then put the LES

I just add a rectangle side parachute to the capsule

Thank you, I was dreaming a lot about ksp last night and I couldn’t remember if this video was a dream or reality.

I usually put a docking port there and the escape tower on top. then put a radial chute on the back and I use the move tool to center the chute towards the center and under the docking port so you can't see it. Works nice
