Into Europe: After 16 years in power, Germany's Angela Merkel is stepping down. In a crowded election, parts of her legacy on environmental matters and the migration crisis are being put into question.

With the potential for a new German coalition, with different parties, will a new German consensus emerge from the 2021 election?

Little correction: the SPD isn't lead by Olaf Scholz, he is only the chancellor candidate. The party leaders are Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken.
Also, the greens are also lead by Robert Habeck alongside to Annalena Baerbock

I'm from Poland and much in my country depends on the next German leader. Our economies are very interconnected, and so if Germany is a stable and prosperous democracy, Poland prospers very much too. I know that opinions on Merkel are divided but I see her leadership through these years as bringing stability and economic success at least to my country.
Though I wish that the migrant crisis was handled differently as it allowed terrible populists and autocrats to rise again in Europe, namely in Hungary, and in my country Poland.

I'm pretty sure that Olaf Scholz will be chancellor in a coalition with his SPD, the Greens and the FDP. Laschet and Baerbock are both extremely unpopular at the moment.

As a german 15 year-old I have never experienced anybody else as chancellor other than Merkel, so this is going to be very interesting. For me, my friends and my classmates the elections are a topic we discuss a lot. We don't know what's going to happen in the end, but it's good to see an outsiders perspective. An outstanding leader, but since the second World War Germany has been blessed with a string of outstanding political leaders from across the political spectrum. Little wonder that it is the leading democracy in Europe. Meanwhile in the UK we have suffered a string of small minded petty self serving little Englanders.
