I find y’all’s perspective very interesting. I was 19 when 9/11 happened, living on a farm in the middle of nowhere. A few students from the nearby college walked over a mile to tell us what was going on. Do you remember all the American flags right after the attacks? It was possibly the most united we had been as a nation within my lifetime (I’m in my early forties).

Please tell me that y'all know what happened on Dec. 7th, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After the attack by Japanese forces, one of the Japanese Admirals said they had woken a sleeping giant and knew the US was going to bare down on them with all its might. One Sept. 11, 2001, that same giant, the US, was not already awake, but they p!$$ed it off. Having been a firefighter/paramedic, I took these attacks very personal, as every American then and since should still take it personally. History should NEVER be forgotten and still taught in school. (Hopping off my little soap box).

I remember hearing that loved ones were gathered together waiting to hear if their family members were found dead or alive and they were comforting each other, but there was an Arab American sitting alone. She was grieving too, but no one was comforting her. Just because she was Arab and her family member was Arab doesn't mean that they were involved in the attacks. She must have felt so alone.

I had a friend who's husband was supposed to be at a meeting at the Pentagon. At the last minute, they changed the location of the meeting. He was safe. But, my friend didn't hear from her husband until 3:00 because the phone lines were absolutely jammed.

Prior to 9/11, people were told to NOT resist hijackings. The thought process was that the hijackers were only after money, seeking asylum or trying to make a political statement, and that they would not injure the hostages or crash the plane because the hijackers wouldn't accomplish those goals if they did. It never occured to anyone that hijackers would be willing to die by intentionally crashing the plane. As such, if passengers or crew resisted, then it could cause the hijackers to become violent.

After 9/11, many safety changes were made. But The biggest change though, as you alluded to, came from the public. No American Plane will EVER be hijacked again by a passenger. The moment someone tried to access the cockpit, not only would they be unable to do so due to the cockpit design, but the passengers would instantly revolt. Even IF the passengers were pacified, no pilot would ever relinquish control of the plane, even if the terrorists were killing people one by one.

There are no bright spots from 9/11. Only lessons learned. Unfortunately, as is often the case with safety rules, those lessons are written in blood.

I was too young to remember much of 9/11, but my Parents remember it vividly, down to the minute. After the second tower fell, and reports began trickling in about a 4th hijacked plane going down in PA, my parents couldn't take it anymore and left to go get some fresh air at a nearby restaraunt. The restaraunt was near the local airport, and my parents didn't like going there much because the planes always made it so noisy, but it was the only open place nearby. As they ate, they made an eerie realization: It was dead quiet. The normally bustling city was virtually abandoned, with very few walking around the streets. And more frightening than that, not a single plane could be seen or heard, even next to the tarmac. My father said "Normally, you would have to scream into each other's ears to have a conversation. But as we sat there, I could COUNT the amount of breaths your mother took as she sat several feet away."

The terrorists planned well. They took flights going to the West coast, with small numbers of passengers. Box cutters were not checked. That's how they killed the pilots. The things that were missed were numerous, one big one was pilots who came rot flight training wanting to learn how to fly the biggest panes. They were middle eastern, bit not in large numbers. Several flight instructors report to authorities that they were saying they "didn't need know how to land the planes". The 20th terrorist was reported in Minnesota & someone actually checked up on it. He was held in custody while they tried to find out more but didn't notify or inquire if other flight schools had others acting the same way. # 20 was still in jail when the planes flew into the buildings. The passengers in the plane in Pennsylvania had placed calls to loved ones that they were hijacked & found out about the planes crashing into important buildings. Agoup of passengers ( they had all been put in the rear of the plane as a group) decided they weren't going to let that happen again & decided to fights knowing they were going to die either way, but would rather go out fighting. They managed to get to the cockpit & the planed actually flipped over before it crashed. The thinking is that plane was meant to fly into the Capitol Building full of congress & senators. Watching coverage of firefighters loading up with gear to climb the stairs to rescue people still haunts me. Each tower building was 100 stories high & they were hiking up when the buildings collapsed. TSA NOW doesn't allow box cutters on board & the cockpit doors are now secured which they weren't before that time.

The live footage is heartbreaking, I've watched the documentaries several times.

I was a senior in college living in Illinois when this happened. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing as I watched in horror. Then the Pentagon, then Flight 93. I saw the section of the Pentagon that was rebuilt because the color of the bricks are different.

Watched some of the eyewitness accounts and the phone calls from those trapped in the building. Many people over the years have died from ingesting the debris.
