As a new fan, s4 Eren never really bothered me as I've seen lots of his pics (and spoilers) before diving into the anime. It was only when I saw the flashback, of Historia teasing Mikasa about her mark, and Eren is just standing there looking innocent that I started missing him. It may sound weird but it felt like I just lost a friend lol. He's so far away now...

People liked to say Eren was a one dimensional or generic character, that he was like other shonen MCs and not interesting.

I always thought his earlier portrayal in the anime in season 1-3 as he grew was empowering. He had a drive and will, and convictions many could only imagine and admire.

The character he developed into may be considered understandable through natural progression, and Isayama is praised for that. Its not like he lost his drive or strength of will, but he doesn't have the same energy and joy and anger. Its like, he lost his hope for the world, and cant see things the same, cant see a good end that would be satisfying to everyone.

Eren is losing his smile from he knowing the reality that titans were actually people.
Also, From Eren kissed Historia's hand he saw the Memories of Future that he is going to kill 80% of population on the Earth. That makes him so sad and depressed.

As sad and tragic as it is he loses his smile, this is exactly why I love him, it shows he's grown up and maturing, he's no longer our wide eyed hero, but a necessary evil. Eren is a perfect example of, "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

one thing i noticed when watching the show was once the time skip happened, you can see in not just eren's, but everyone's eyes that they are lifeless and dead. that detail really stood out to me, especially cause i seen eyes like that. from a soldier who started working at the college i attended. he was in afghanistan for a long time and he would tell us stories of the things he'd do....and without a second thought. his eyes showed me he was a very dangerous man who was on the brink. i was pretty cool with him, but i certainly didn't let my guard down around him.

In my opinion its a reflection of how at the start he was more like his mother, but growing up became to become more like his father, and how that gradual loss of happiness was the suspension that was built up until the very end of his life.

Edit: Ok obviously nobody gets that it is a metaphor. I meant that he kinda just looks more sad as the anime progresses, I didn't actually mean that the light in his eyes died out. Jeez.
