I love the video! I am in an Electronics engineering tech program and I love the embedded course where we go over Arduino and misc components. I find register coding to be interesting and fun, but it is hard to branch out to other controllers outside the Arduino family, do you have any advice on where to go from here? Perhaps a starter microcontroller to look into :)

Grrr, you didn't mention what the really cheap small board was called.

One thing I would say that if you're going to get an Arduino, get the Nano rather than the Uno. The former plugs straight into the breadboard, making connections more convenient.

I recommend the Elegoo Starter Kits, too, as you get an Uno clone plus a bunch of components to play with for the same price as an Arduino.

THE TOAST IS A LIE. ;)

This was NOT an "Arduino Hardware Overview". This was an Arduino sales pitch. I was expecting an overview of the hardware, as described in the title of this video. FAIL.
