Yes, god is within us, and listening with your heart is how you connect directly. My family (Jew decendents- Levy) knew church was not needed to receive god, but it's nice for community support reasons. If I remember correctly, my father would tell me god didn't want big shrines built for him. Praying together in the streets or a community building for shelter was enough. So what then would you say about a person following their hearts and contradicting all the rest of scripture?

If everyone could just follow their hearts, what is this "narrow path" that is written of? If everyone set their own personal precepts based on a wicked and deceitful heart, that would be a very broad path, as the one described to lead to destruction.
