How do I manage my hives when most of them are in my 84 year old Dad's garden!?! Short of having to evacuate them to my property (not sure what the neighbours would say!) I will still attempt to visit my Bees for as long as possible - just don't expect to see my lovely Dad in the videos for a while!

I can definitely understand your concerns and worries. But at the end of the day it's your dad's health that must be paramount over everything else. I guess I'm in a little bit better of a situation here with the virus running rampant in the USA as I have one apiary in my backyard but my other five are on other people's properties but they are not near the residence. So I will be able to get to them to service them without coming into contact with the property owners or anyone else. Hopefully your worst-case scenarios won't come into play and life will continue as normal, but I guess only time will tell and we will definitely know when we get there. Thanks for sharing my friend.

Here is a quick tip for any one who thinks their bees are going to swarm. All you have to do is put them another box on with wax foundation, They will tear down all the swarm cells and change their attention onto filling thr frames! You can do this at any time you are going to be away from the hive for a long time. If its only a short time then just a super will do! if longer then maybe two or another brood box full of foundation. This method has worked for me for the last few decades anyways. You can also put bait hives up as an added precaution, But I would not bother splitting them up etc if your going to be away for a good while. When you do a split you then have to keep a close eye on them. So could prove counter productive so to speak.
I can make my bees swarm naturally at any time from April to June I never let them Swarm beyond July as its not fare on the bees.

In NC (US), we are able to travel to visit our beehives because they are considered essential. But of course that doesn't answer the conundrum of spreading illness. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you.

Make sure your check your temperature before visiting your dad's and remain about 3 meters apart. That's what they are telling us here in the USA. Does your dad get out and about by himself and come into contact with people in the public? I have 5 hives in my backyard and I'm the club apiarist for 6 hives that are secluded away from the public at a University research center. I probably will continue training until the cases in our state start to increase but will continue to manage the hives no matter what. We can only cross our fingers and hope for the best but neither of our countries have competent governments at the moment when we need them the most.
