Everyone, yes Everyone studying Electrical Engineering, should watch all the 8.02 lectures, which are truly wonderful. I graduated many years ago in the UK, but having watched these lectures recently, at the age of 60, I now understand electromagnetism far better than I ever did. And I have put this knowledge to use in real industrial solutions. Thankyou so much Prof. Lewin.

Hello Sir, I am Hrishikesh Biswas from India. I have few questions on light-

Once light enters in a denser medium it slows down, and when escapes into rarer medium it gets back to a higher velocity.

Q 1. When light hits the interface of a denser or rarer medium, does its velocity change at an instant?
Light instantly gaining or dropping to a different velocity is a conflict to the idea that light can't surpass the speed C. An instant change in velocity would mean that the rate of change of velocity is undefined i.e v2 - v1/0 ms^-2 which seems to be a very contradicting value.

Q 2. Light shifts to a higher velocity after passing into rarer medium. How does light get this extra energy to speed up? Can it be that there are other properties of light that gets compensated for making change in velocity possible as it travels through various media?
