A very strong and shallow earthquake recorded by the USGS as M7. 0 struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia at 05: 44 UTC on March 31, 2022
The epicenter was about 280 km (174 mi) southeast of Tadina, New Caledonia and 368 km (229 mi) southeast of Isangel, Vanuatu.
There are no people within a 100 km (62 miles) radius.
Based on all available data, dangerous tsunami waves are predicted for some coasts, NWS PTWC reports.
Tsunami waves are predicted to be less than 0. 3 m (0. 98 ft) above high tide on the coasts of Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
Actual coastal amplitudes may differ from predicted amplitudes due to forecast inaccuracies and local conditions. In particular, maximum tsunami amplitudes on atolls and in areas with fringing or barrier reefs are likely to be much smaller than forecast.
The USGS has issued a green alert due to the economic loss associated with shaking. There is a low probability of casualties and damage.
In general, the population of this region lives in structures that are very vulnerable to earthquakes, although some structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unknown/miscellaneous and wooden structures.
