Hearing a pregnant Christine cry and say that she felt like she lost her best friend when Kody started courting Robyn was heartbreaking. And now knowing how little Kody cared for her makes it that much worse, like she was being lied to for more than a decade.

Pretty spot on. My understanding is the point of the show was attempting to shine a positive light on polygamy so of course he wasn’t going to come out and say I married Christine because her family was royalty. I think season 17 is the real Kody that’s been hidden from cameras for a long time.

It seems those very early years were very tough financially and emotionally. Then the show began and Robyn fell in during Christine’s pregnancy. The honeymoons had been non existent for the first three wives and then he takes Robyn off for almost two weeks after having this huge wedding. It clearly was the beginning of the end. Robyn was there for the inception of financial security… her experience was vastly different from from everything the first three had endured.

How Robyn was brought into the family was a big problem. First, Kody and Meri met and started courting Robyn without the knowledge of Janelle or Christine. When they finally revealed that, they both said they had God's word that ordained that courtship. Christine was against adding a 4th wife but she got maneuvered into sucking it up. The family also had real financial issues, so adding a 4th wife, 3 children, and another household meant everyone had less. Right away, Kody and Robyn formed a single unit against the other wives - like when they picked out the wedding dress and the wedding cake. Kody and Robyn were also violating religious norms in the conduct of their courtship.

I remember watching the first episode thinking, "I wish I could find a husband who was such a good communicator". Joke is totally on me 😂

It’s the episode where Christine is in labor with Truley and Kody goes off to see Robyn is the one you need to watch

The family had already reached it's capacity. The older children already understood the natural jealousy that happens in plural marriage but the adults worked it out. Christine's intuition predicted the demise of family as they knew it. And she was right.

I think the sit down in the first season where Robyn's wedding dress gets talked about is when some of the issues become so very obvious. Especially looking back!

As someone who just read the book they co-wrote and also having watched the show from the beginning, I really believe that they were putting on a front on the show and more importantly they were not being honest with each other. It was more important to present a united happy front than to actually be that as a family.

Yes! Please keep doing old recaps of your opinion. Make the vids a lil longer too if you can. We don’t all have the attention span of this generation 😂

For those of us who have been watching from the beginning, Season 17 was our reward for 16 years of boring television. Knowing what I know now, and rewatching the shows, the signs were all there and I never noticed.

Meri put Robin in kody’s orbit because she thought having this secret would make them closer. The other two wives didn’t even know about Robin for little while. Not to mention Robin came into the family with massive debt.

Robyn was getting special treatment from the beginning. He was going to her house and staying instead of her and the kids coming to hang out at the big house. Kody put her on the calender with equal time before she was a wife, he was kissing her before marriage, she got Christine's oldest to stay at her house as a nanny, big fancy wedding and 10 day honeymoon. The other wives got an over night at a motel, no kissing until the marriage ceremony, no equal access to Kody until marriage, no babsitters or nanny, quickie weddings for Christine and Janelle. He put Robyn on a pedestal from the get go and treated her better and her kids better than the rest.

Christine was 37 and Robyn just turned 31 early in season one so 6 yrs isn't a big age gap - but they did sell it that way.

Christine was in charge of 12 kids ! And homeschooling . That certainly not healthy !

I agree with you. We can’t know how much Kody was playing to the camera vs reality. This helps to understand how Robyn was NEVER integrated into the family - by her choosing. Sharing the home was key to the dynamic for the kids especially. There were actually NO kids until all 3 of the OG wives were on board, so they experienced the family growth fully together.

Hubby and I recently watched all previous 16 seasons over the last four months or so. It’s amazing the perspective we have now seeing things sort of in reverse. It was so obvious that the family wanted to present a certain image on TV and with that came a lot of fake smiles and over emphasis on how wholesome their family and the dynamic was between all the adults. I’m thankful that by the third season, Christine was starting to really be honest with her feelings and her perspective. She still struggled to try and conform to what Kody and her faith said to do as a plural wife but she wasn’t willing to pretend it was all happy all the time anymore. The cracks are there, if you really do watch for them.

Very close, except that Christine was already feeling jealous during her pregnancy with Truely. It just so happens that Meri and Janelle had already had issues about the kitchen and Meri never let Christine and Janelle walk through her space, leaving C to walk outside in winter to enter J’s space to care for the kids. The cracks were there. They just wanted to put a good picture on it all.
I do think Robyn was the nail in the coffin. Later you’ll see that Kody wasn’t there for most of Christine’s labor with Truely, who was born in a hospital, unlike Christine’s other kids. He was with Robyn. Oof, that had to hurt!

Thank you for making the statement about Robyn coming in after 16 years to an already established marriage with values for the unions and parenting. Not only did Robyn come in later with an eye on the man for her own stability and that of her kids, she was also able to influence Kody to change the value system that was already in place for 16 years.

At least the first season was done with rose painted glasses. The level these kids were parentified is massive, Janelles oldest would get all his siblings up and would make the breakfast and ready for school, Christine’s daughter would put to bed their siblings because kody couldn’t even tuck them in if it wasn’t her night and she worked at night. One of her teenage daughters went and lived with robyn as a nanny is was she was 13 years old.
The big episode to watch are kody going back to his home town, truely birth, the honeymoon, truely kidney failure episodes, kody trying to take his daughter on a holiday, the anthropology students and I think you will find it interesting any of the physiology appointments they do. Also, any of Gwendolyn’s reactions.
