Trying to Survive in Vintage Story (First Time Playing)

My first time playing Vintage Story. This is basically like Minecraft, but a lot more survival focused, and with very in-depth crafting systems. I kind of had an idea of what to expect, but the game surprised me in many ways. It was quite fun figuring out how to survive!

What I find so compelling about Vintage Story, after years and years of Minecraft, is that one of the long term goals in Minecraft is to automate away all of the tasks so that you need not do them - while in Vintage Story, they've made the tasks engaging enough so that the act of doing them is rewarding in itself.

And afterwards, the things you get out of it (a weapon after lots of forging, or a cellar full of food after a long growing season) are rewards *on top of* the enjoyment of engaging with the systems in the first place.

A lot of people don't realize how good this game is yet, but I think it could get very popular once it gains traction. I watched this video the whole way through and would love to see more.

Love how much the Humble Abode resembles stone age/early bronze age house reconstructions i have seen. It really feels like you are advancing through the ages.

After picking this game up a couple of years ago, it has quickly become one of my favorites. One of my favorite things about the game is the small details the devs decided to include. Like how moss is more common on the north side of trees, the smoke particles from campfires being carried in the wind, the way the clouds during the rain raise up into taller storm clouds which you can see off in the distance and know that it is raining over in that region (because rain is localized instead of global like Minecraft). So many small details that add to the immersion and make the world feel more lively. In the upcoming update they are adding particalized insects which is yet another small thing that adds so much. I do hope you continue to play this game because there is a lot more you haven't seen.

That Runescape OST running in the background bumped this up to an 11/10

Fun video! A little tip I wanted to mention, holding an item in your off hand increases your hunger rate, so putting your torch away during the day will help your foraging and hunting last a bit longer. That was a rough spawn point on your first world, don't blame you for rerolling!

Oh boy, you’re going to love this. If you love old Minecraft, what you’ll enjoy is that every decision you make is valuable, and everything you get feels valuable. Nothing is trivial. You genuinely work for your progress, and you have to make hard decisions on what you will do, because there are real survival and progression tradeoffs for those early decisions. Enjoy it! Will definitely be watching.

Also a hint that is good to know about this game if you do end up dying because we all do trust me, go into your settings and there is a minimap option as well as a coordinate sheet underneath the minimap and its got built in markers and other stuff like that ☕

You did incredibly well for a first playthrough. Vintage Story quickly became one of my favourite games, it's basically all i wanted from a survival game, so glad more and more people are discovering it. There should be a new update coming pretty soon i belive, the game is constantly growing with a couple of big updates every year and the developers are always listening to the community.

Ever since I bought Vintage Story, I haven't played Minecraft. It doesn't scratch every itch that Minecraft does - redstone and command block engineers wouldn't be happy with the game at the moment and even builders would miss some features - but if you're looking for a blocky game about surviving, it doesn't get better than this. Although the best thing about VS, in my opinion, is the developers' relationship with their community - the modding support and the consistently high quality updates based on player feedback.

I'm happy you restarted because there's nothing less fun for a viewer than transitions and long journeys from spawn after death, breaks the story apart frequently so picking a better spawn wasn't the cheap option, I think it was the better option. Because now for the viewer Every journey from spawn won't be a battle and for us that's also good long term as you're less likely to burnout on a game save that's not spawning you on difficult terrain after every death. So for us this is really a win-win.

So a little context to this and to point out @3:30 this game wasn't just inspired by Minecraft it originally was a MineCraft mod called Vintagecraft. Then later became it's own standalone game.

I'm glad you are having a blast with VS! I REALLY love this game.

The progression is a VERY slow burn and may not be to everyones tastes. The cool part about VS is how customizable it is so that can be changed with mods and ingame settings. I personally play with the primative tools mods and slightly more ore surface spawns to boost the early game.

Anyways if you have any any questions about VS let me know! I'm happy to help where I can!

Love the vids man!

Alright, I subscribed now that I'm invested in seeing where this newbie take on VS goes... I love your house, and suggest installing as much fencing & gates as you possibly can, to complement your lack of fighting abilities or fleeing abilities.

Please continue this series for at least a while (if you want)

So happy to see more people playing Vintage Story, the game deserves more attention. It indeed isn't for everyone and people might think it's tedious but it's so rewarding to do anything in this game that I don't mind spending hours to just make some clay stuff lol
Hope you do more videos about VS in the future! And a tip I would give to everyone is ALWAYS check the survival guide, the Everything tab literally has everything about the game. Your first technological jump will be when you get the saw because it unlocks so much stuff.
