Y’all don’t call a guy oppa if you don’t know him or you don’t speak Korean. If you speak Korean to a Korean guy and are friends/know him well/he’s your boyfriend then I don’t see anything wrong with it. But if you don’t speak Korean and you aren’t close with the guy it just doesn’t make sense why you would use it ? Except to some guys who have a thing for that which usually that’s a little creepy too.. a bit of a red flag so run the other way 👀

Folks, this doesn't mean you go around calling every Korean man Oppa. Some clearly feel uncomfortable when you do it.

this is just MY experience, im not speaking for anyone else: i had to move to korea bc i got accepted to seoul national university for my masters. i made really good friends with a group of ppl in my department, & we all spoke korean and english (im filipino btw). sometimes we'd speak in english, and other times in korean.

when we first met, i asked them how they wanted me to address them, honorific wise. they all said, "please use honorifics (ex. 선배님) when talking in korean, but in english, dont use them." and the reason for tht was bc they didnt want ppl to side-eye me and think im being disrespectful while speaking korean w/o using honorifics, if that makes sense. when we got to know each other more (like 2 yrs later), they asked me to call them "oppa" since we all grew close to each other over time.

ANYWAY, despite what ppl are saying in the comments, if you KNOW someone who is korean and yall are close, PLEASE ASK them how they would like to be addressed before calling them "oppa" or smth. (and look out for the red flag ppl too...). A lot of ppl dont want to be called “oppa” or “noona”. It could make them uncomfortable. Always ask first.
and stay away from the weird ones who fetishize it...

I call my close friends like that and they don't really mind it. Like they aren't in the "You should call me like that" and aren't disgusted by it either. When they see you adopt Korean culture I guess it just comes out as normal

I feel that when non-Asian woman, knowing that I'm Korean, ask me, "Can I call you 'oppa'?, " means she's flirting with me.

As a korean woman if a guy (overly) insists that u call him oppa its a HUGE RED FLAG. Guys who are obsessed with this are usually the traditional type(in a bad misogynistic way).
