How to do a CHOP BLOCK (with Craig Bryant)

In this video I am joined by Craig Bryant (a former international player) and Craig shows us how to do a backhand chop block.

A chop block is a great way to mess up your opponent. You can use a chop block to change the speed and spin on the ball and generally cause lots of confusion.

In the video, Craig demonstrates the chop block technique and I take on Craig in a few points. Can I return Craig's chop block? Watch to find out...

The cool thing about this shot is that you can literally use it right next to your body. If someone smashes the ball at you when you're caught too close to the table, the chop block can get you out of that situation.

Usually I love doing weird sidespin and underspin variations in this situation which are actually harder to do, but admittedly the chop block is more effective so I will try doing that much more often

What a great video. It's a shot a lot of us have seen here or there but I don't think I've ever seen much of a demonstration on it on how to execute it. Great work.

Another excellent, very interesting video.
I liked the cheers when Tom got a point.

awesome, Craig!
really shows how many players simply follow patterns of playing in their rally but
disruptive technique just unrails them as they do not read the spin production of the opponent or maybe they realise something is happening but no proper countermeasure is in place to be triggered.
Koki Niwas setting up of the scene starts with his previous ball inviting/forcing the player to a specific placement allowing him to wait and prepare for his trademark humilating chopblock?

Funny, I played this backhand chop block a few weeks ago without knowing it was an actual shot. Just playful tabletennis (very low level) and I tried this and the ball just went 'dead' with a lot of sidespin. My opponent said it was the shot of the evening, while I felt it came easily. Definitely going to try this more often, especially against players who dominate me with their fast topspin forehands.

Great video Tom, I use a soft-anti on the backhand which frustrates a lot of players. Will get the robot out and practice this shot, interesting to see the results.

This chop works against a forehand topspin from a right-handed player.
Could you also give a tutorial, how to do the chop against BH topspin? Not many pro players play this chop, maybe Ma Long, Lin Shidong, Simon Gauzy are a few of those. And in the past, Kenta Matsudaira was the master for that block.

I was looking for this lesson for a long time. I'm your newest subscriber. Can you teach the forehand chop block too? And thanks for your vídeos.
