He needs a lesson in Hebrew. Yom with a number or evening and morning means an ordinary day. It is not poetic. It is historical narrative.

My apologies if anyone has already brought this up on this thread, but long age of the earth contradicts what the Bible says about the origin of sin. Because if there was death and suffering before Adam, {through the process of evolution} then that contradicts what the Bible says about how sin was the origin of death. Romans 5:12, Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Exodus 20:8-11. Gods children work 6 days then rest the 7th day. Then in verse 11 God refers to Creation. For in 6 days the Lord and all that is in them.

Every time Yom is used with a number (1St day) it is 24 hours. Every time Yom is used with morning and evening it means 24 hrs.

Genesis 1:1 is a PREAMBLE of the narration of Yahweh's creation of the universe and earth. The details of that creation are from Genesis 1:2 through Genesis 2:3. Just as Genesis 1:26-27 is an OVERVIEW of the creation of man while Genesis 2:4 through Genesis 2:25 is the details of His creating them "male and female". Since you seem to have trouble understanding what the word "day" means in this CONTEXT, do you also have a problem understanding what a "woman" is? (The latter issue seems to be going around these "days.")

'Day' could mean this, 'Day' could mean era of time", the issue isn't whether 'day' in the Bible can mean longer periods. The issue is what does the word 'day' mean in Genesis 1? Turek uses a straw man to evade what 'day' actually means. I would much rather him be honest and admit: "I don't believe God created how He told us He did in Genesis 1".

I'm a newer Christian and having a hard time with Genesis. Too many questions. I had started with Revelation and then picked random books of the Bible to read. I loved all of them, but Genesis is a big question mark for me.

Ever occurred to you that the debate is in part because of limitations of the English language? In my native Khmer language the word 'day' is ថ្ងៃ and in the Khmer Bible it has the unique unambiguous meaning of a 24 hour day. I just can't fathom the sophistry some garrulous teachers go through to distort what any 5 year old can get from a literal reading of God's Word.

“Depends on the word day means?” So was Jesus in the grave for 3 days or 3 thousand or 3 million years?

Frank Turek you are compromising in your answers. How about this scenario Frank? You're wrong, and God is true when He created how He told us He created in 6 literal days with the context of Genesis 1? Turek says "there are gaps in the genealogies", where? And it matters what we believe as Christians how God created, why would we compromise with evolution or billions of years?!

Perspective is key with biblical interpretation

For 1500 years the consensus was that the earth is stationary and the sun revolves around the earth. Started by Aristotle using the plain reading of scripture. Science didn’t correct scripture but a skewed interpretation. It took the church almost 100 years to accept this. The same is going on today with the age of the earth, and the length of days in genesis.

Ancient Hebrew historical narrative often has a summary followed by a description. That is exactly what moses did in Genesis 1. Turek should know this. Moses never changes the definition of Yom. It is divided into two 12 hour parts and clearly means a 24 hour day. Further in Exodus 20 when God is speaking to Moses on Mt. Sinai he clearly says he created the earth in 6 days.

We’re not in the 7th, we’re going into the 7th. The six day is the creation or fashioning of man in the image of the Creator. The 7th day the kingdom will be on earth

Both OEC and YEC believe in a literal 6 days, they differ on the length on those days .

Genesis 1 is not poetry, it is historical narrative. The 4th commandment says exactly what it means- in six days God made everything and established our working week so we aren't slaves working all the time. Genesis one defines day, a period of light. It is then used figuratively in english and Hebrew as a period characterized by something, eg judgement. The geneaologies of Genesis do NOT have gaps. Matthews does, but it is a very different list.
