The shadow touch IS permanent but you can only see it if another player is holding the shadow weapon

Birdo you know, Midas from the Battle pass can turn chug cannon into gold. Summer Midas or Shadow Midas they can't do it

If somebody else is in the passenger seat of the truck and a shadow midas is driving, then the passenger will see the shadow effect on the exhaust pipes.
