WordPress Mistakes to AVOID for Startup Websites

If you're starting a website, the chances are you're going to be starting off your website on WordPress.

0:05 It's one of the most popular platforms out there. But here's a mistake most people make when they're starting out their website. Because it's like oh I want this pretty design, I want it customized, and I want all these templates, I want all these plugins. And I hate to say it, but none of that matters. Just start your website, get it out there, get traffic.

0:30 Don't worry about what plugins other people are using. Don't worry about how pretty your design is. You need to get traction. If I told you hey your design is pretty, it looks amazing, what is it going to do? All it's going to do is build your ego and make you feel good. But if no one is coming to your website and you have the most beautiful design in your eyes, no one's going to see it, so it doesn't matter.

1:00 Or if you start getting people to your website and you think you have the most pretty design and template but everyone else is complaining, what does that tell you? It means that your design's not working out. So instead of focusing on the design or plugins or how amazing you can make your website's user experience when you're just starting out no one's coming to your website.

1:30 So instead of worrying about all those details I want you to focus on just getting your website out there. How about creating some content, share that content on Twitter, Facebook? If you don't have a following that's okay. Ask your friends to share your content, share your website, spread the word. If your friends don't want to do it, you can go comment on other blogs that are related in your industry, provide value, and when you comment on blogs they ask you for your name, email address, URL, and a comment.

2:00 When you put in your URL, it allows people to link on your, click on your name and go back to your website. The point I'm trying to make is there are many more important things that you need to be focusing on when you're releasing a website than your design or how pretty it is or the plugins. Just get something out there, get some traction. Once you know that you love what you're doing and it's starting to work, then worry about your design. Then worry about what plugins you should be adding.

The best advice I have got, no body provided yet. Neil, you’re totally right, I also fall in those kind of people who care a lot of design and keep delaying writing contents.

But for sure I would now start writing content rather focusing on its templates or design

Agreed. I'll admit that I worried about the design at first, but since I built my website to build traffic, I chose something that looked half decent and went from there. By focusing on getting traffic, via SEO, Facebook Ads, and organic Instagram postings, I've been able to amass hundreds of visits a month. The moral of the story is too get started. It's really easy to get lost in DM since there are so many different ways of doing things but the important thing is to get started and practice.

I can agree with Neil what he says is truly helpful listen to him.. I've literally spent months on months and countless hours to just get started my blog and website worrying everything on how it should look what things need to be added which in fact at beginning trust me it doesn't matter.. especially don't get trap in the creation of a logo just try to take whatever you get as logo and put it up to make your website live is all I can say confidently.

A lot of people miss the point: design needs to serve function. Function in this case is your content. If you are messing around with design stuff instead of getting the content right, you're doing it wrong. Once you have your content you will know what design you need to serve that content.

Thanks Neil once more a great advice! Though it is also true that depending on your business you will need to give a very good impression from day-one to convince people you are serious and dedicated about your services or products and about the user experience. Even more if your competition has a great look & feel and more trayectory than you. We have to try to stand out in every detail. At least I would not invite clients to my office if it is under construction or hasn't been painted or if I have so little furniture that I just can't give them a nice experience when talking about business with them, I'd prefer to meet them at a starbucks and buy them a coffe for example ;p
