To those wondering about the ending:

The Radiance is the original God and creator of bugkind, though at the price of keeping everyone locked in a hive mind and primitive. The King sealed it away and gave everyone free will and the ability to evolve. The Radiance didn't take kindly to that, and created the Plague (that orange crap on everyone). In return, the King created the Hollow Knights from the Void to act as living containment units for the Plague; in the normal ending, you fulfill that roll when you defeat the old Hollow Knight. In the true ending, you confront The Radiance itself; those black ghosts are the previous Hollow Knights, and at the end, you sacrifice your individuality and become part of the Void to kill The Radiance for good, thus ending the plague.
