Russia’s newest diesel-electric submarine Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky launched a Kalibr cruise missile from the Sea of Japan, hitting a coastal target around 1,000 km or 621 miles away

The Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet said in a statement,
“The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky launched a cruise missile of the Kalibr complex at a ground target from a submerged position in the Sea of Japan. At the estimated time, the missile hit the coastal target position on the tactical field of Surkum [in the Khabarovsk region]. The firing range exceeded 1,000 kilometers”

In this video Defense Updates analyzes why Kilo-class submarine Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky launching Kalibr missile is a deadly combination?

So Russia is finally catching up to what the US could do 20 years ago? Nice

Yep. Big torpedo tubes means lots of new things for old weapon systems. Russia play to their strengths, no doubt about it.

One of our programs here at darpa affixes wireless sensors on the noses of all hammerhead sharks and that sends signals of any electromagnetic changes in the oceans. We clearly know where all submarines are located in all the oceans and we clearly know when and where any and all missiles are launched... this is but 1 example of what we do here at darpa. Even when you think outside the box, we know what you’re thinking before you say it...

They are detectable if the assets can get in it's operational area. But with the surface vessels over it making noise and NATO assets steering clear of the exercise they are harder to detect. Under war conditions the surface vessels would be gone in 36 hours and the submarine would be chased into a frigate screen before they could get close to high end assets.

Cool story guys, the tomahawk can hit a target double that range probably more accurately I might add 😂

A pregnant woman snorkeling technically counts as a submarine.

A NATO asymmetric response is to position hundreds of B-61 armed F-35As very close to Russian borders.

It's also possible that another prepositioned sub fired the missiles at Syria, and the Krasnodar was no where near Syria. Russia is world class when it comes to disinformation.

About damn time the Russians build something that didn't just explode or light itself on fire.

It's the same as the American Virginia class, but the Virginia is nuclear powered...that can launch a tomahawk cruise missile, which is the kalibr cruise missile is the same yea.

I think the last sentence of the action report would read as: "The submarine did not burst into flame after launch. Thank god."

The main question should be, are russian missiles easily detected. The US has many tools to target missiles, and their systems are proven to work against mach 4+ coyote target drones flying high or low, and satellites at mach 25. Does russian missiles have autonomous targeting that does not use radar that gives away its position or when its targeting network is disrupted in high jamming. Can russian missiles really surprise a US carrier group. These are important questions to answer. The US has so many VLS at sea to tap the living crap out of any projectile. Not saying the kilo or kalibre is crap by any means.
