My head canon is this would actually take place sometime just before John has his final showdown with Micah. Dutch haunted by his memories goes for a wandering solo ride and ends up in this place, confronted with the ghost of his sins. When he returns to camp and John shows up for vengeance on Micah the nightmare is still fresh in Dutch's mind. Which is why he finally sides against Micah and shoots him.

For me this is now canon. After that Dutch went to Mount Hagen to do what needs to be done.

This feels like something that actually happened, not the part where he goes back to beaver hollow because obviously he will not, but actually the thoughts that Dutch has on his my mind are always playing he always remembers the gang and the old days where it used to be all good before blackwater, during the story of RDR 2 he was slowly losing his mind because of the trauma of what happened, people assume that Dutch is a bad guy and I don’t blame them in reality Dutch is one of the most tragic characters I’ve seen, in the epilogue Dutch is nothing but a shell of his former self he was broken realizing what he has done to the gang and leaving Arthur to die he came back and shot Micah, but in the end it was pointless he got consumed by the hatred and the dream of living a free life as an outlaw that’s why we get a crazy Dutch in RDR 1 he is a man that refuses to change in a world that doesn’t need the like of him anymore.
